DJ Nicole Hyala undergoes thyroidectomy for cancer

After being diagnosed with thyroid cancer last January, longtime morning radio host Nicole Hyala recently revealed that she underwent a total thyroidectomy last week, a procedure that involves partially or completely removing the thyroid gland to treat the disease. In her latest Storytime post on Instagram, the bubbly broadcaster opened up about the experience.
“So I just had my total thyroidectomy last Friday, July 18 and nakakatawa kasi nung nahimasmasan ako, sabi ng asawa ko after the surgery, ang una ko pong sinabi ay, 'Mic'. Medyo kinabahan nga siya kasi bakit hindi pangalan niya ang tinawag, ang tinawag ay si Mic. Yun pala ang sinabi ko ay, 'Mic test, mic test.' So sobrang nasa sub-conscious ko talaga,” Nicole shared.
Nicole Hyala, known off-air as Emmylou Gaite-Tiñana, shared her immense relief and gratitude that her voice remained intact after surgery, a signature part of her identity and a key element in her more than 20-year journey in the radio industry.
“At sobrang prayer ko talaga na ang aking voice on radio ay hindi mapapaos at hindi magbabago. And true enough, God is so faithful sapagka't ang galing po ng team of doctors… So they were able to preserve my beautiful voice. So ayan, magpapagaling lang po ako ng bonggang bongga, magpapalakas and all. And I'll be back on radio soon. Oh di ba sabi ko sa inyo? Kaya hindi ko kina-cancel yung August 9 na raket di ba? Kasi naniniwala ako that God is faithful and that I will be okay. So thank you so much for your prayers. I hope to be able to go home today at ma-discharge na today,” she remarked.
“I am so grateful na na-preserve ang aking iconic voice. Di lang ako nag-try pa ng Nicole Hyala laugh kasi baka mawakwak ang tahi. Hahahaha! Road to recovery na tayo hanggang maging cancer-free na. :) Mapagtatagumpayan ang lahat by God's grace,” she added.
Nicole also added a health update, saying she was released from the hospital on July 20 and will continue recovery at home before resuming work next month. “Discharged na! :) Papagaling at papalakas na lang sa bahay and I will be back at work before we all know it, in time sa paglabas ni Jose Mari Chan at Mariah Carey. Hahahaha! Thank you for all your prayers! Tuloy ang raket sa August 9! Hahahaha!”
