In Memoriam: Divine Adili and Rene Baterbonia's basketball journeys

Divine Adili was one of the most recognizable young big men in Philippine collegiate basketball. The 21-year-old Nigerian center stood 6-foot-10 and was affectionately known as "The Big Man" because of his towering presence on the court.
Before joining Ateneo de Manila University, Adili starred for New Era University, where he helped the Junior Hunters win back-to-back high school championships and earned consecutive Most Valuable Player awards in the NAASCU Juniors Division in 2023 and 2024.
He later brought his talents to the Ateneo Blue Eagles, serving as a key inside presence during UAAP Season 88. Despite being a rookie, Adili showed flashes of his potential with strong rebounding performances and double-double outings that hinted at a bright future ahead.
Meanwhile, Rene Baterbonia was a rising star who had yet to make his UAAP debut but had already built an impressive résumé in the youth ranks. The 19-year-old standout from Agusan del Sur gained national recognition through the Palarong Pambansa, where he helped lead Davao Region to its historic first-ever boys' basketball championship in 2025. His stellar play earned him both the tournament MVP award and a spot on the Mythical Five.
Baterbonia, likewise, wore the Philippine colors at the ASEAN School Games in Brunei, where the squad captured the championship gold. He was set to begin the next chapter of his career with Ateneo in UAAP Season 89, joining a new generation of Blue Eagles poised to carry the program forward.
Though their journeys were cut tragically short, Divine and Rene leave behind legacies defined by talent, hard work, and the promise they brought to Philippine basketball. Here is a look at the young athletes, their achievements, and the basketball journeys they were building.
