In 2018, a research showed that pneumonia have caused 56.8 thousand deaths in the Philippines, and was the 3rd leading cause of death among Filipino women in the same year.

According to Mayo Clinic, Pneumonia "is an infection that inflames the air sacs in one or both lungs. The air sacs may fill with fluid or pus (purulent material), causing cough with phlegm or pus, fever, chills, and difficulty breathing."

A variety of organisms, including bacteria, viruses, like the COVID-19 virus, and fungi, can cause pneumonia.

In 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, several celebrities got infected with the virus and developed pneumonia.


Others, like Ate Gay, were diagnosed with pneumonia but tested negative for COVID-19.
