Meet Choi Woo-shik, the charming lead actor of 'Would You Marry Me'

Roots in Canada, heart in Korea

The South Korean-born actor spent most of his early life with his family in Canada and these roots raised him to acquire impressive skills in speaking the English language.

However, Woo-shik took a leap of faith at the age of 21 when he went back to Korea with high hopes of pursuing his acting dreams. He attended a TV audition that led him to his debut role in the 2011 drama titled The Duo.

He first started out in supporting roles for television series like Rooftop Prince and You Are My Destiny, among others.

But in his main character break for the coming-of-age indie film Set Me Free, he admirably won the attention of critics and audiences as he bagged the Actor of the Year award at the Busan International Film Festival.

While he embarked on many other roles after Set Me Free, his role as Yong-guk in the 2016 phenomenal zombie thriller film Train to Busan was what earned him a ticket to international fame.

Woo-shik later crossed paths with the critically acclaimed South Korean director Bong Joon-ho when he landed a spot in the South Korean-meets-Hollywood lineup of actors for the 2017 film Okja.

In 2019, he joined forces with Bong Joon-ho once again when he top-billed his barrier-breaking, multi-awarded film alongside Park So-dam and Song Kang-ho.

For his role in Parasite, he was awarded Best Actor (Film) at the 18th Korea First Brand Awards. The whole cast also earned recognition for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture at the 26th Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Parasite was a critical and commercial success in the international scene, making history as the first South Korean movie to win the Palme d'Or at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. They also brought home the honor of Best Foreign Language Film at the 77th Golden Globe Awards.

With his colorful history of acting endeavors, Choi Woo-shik can boast of his versatility as an actor; his praiseworthy skills can cover the polarity of dark thrillers and warm romances.

In 2021, he played alongside Itaewon Class actress Kim Da-mi in the well-received romantic drama titled Our Beloved Summer. This project marked the reunion of the two stars since they first worked together for the 2018 mystery action movie The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion.
