There were many firsts in this year's Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (FAMAS) Awards.
For the first time in its 68-year history, a documentary won Best Picture. The much coveted accolade went to Alyx Arumpac's 'Aswang,' a documentary dealing with the first three years President Rodrigo Duterte's so-called "drug war."
The documentary follows two main subjects--a street kid named Jomari whose parents are both in prison due to drug-related charges, and Brother Jun Santiago of the Redemptorist Brothers who constantly tries to help with the burial fees of the drug war's casualties.
'Aswang' also bagged the awards for Best Documentary, Best Editing, and Best Cinematography.
Meanwhile, Kapuso actress Janine Gutierrez won Best Actress for her role in director Rae Red's movie 'Babae at Baril.'
She has previously won Best Actress at the Gaward Urian Awards and at the QCinema International Film Festival for her portrayal in the film.
'Babae at Baril' also won Best Film Scoring, Best Cinematography, and Best Production Design.
The film tells the story of an unnamed woman, played by Janine, who faces constant harassment and disrespect at work and around her community until she finds a gun left on her doorstep.
A few special awards were also given away that night like the German Moreno Youth Achievement Award which went to young actress Liza Soberano and actor and former racer Matteo Guidicelli.
Due to the continued health risks brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 FAMAS Awards was held in a virtual ceremony on December 20 and was streamed on various social media and video platforms.
The awards night was hosted by Kapuso star and 'Descendants of the Sun' actress Jasmine Curtis-Smith and actor award-winning actor Christian Bables.
