IU kicks off new musical era with 'Unknown Planet'

IU has given fans a glimpse of what's ahead for her long-awaited sixth studio album with two brand-new songs.
The singer-songwriter dropped "Unknown Planet" on September 10, a digital single containing the tracks “Unknown Planet” and “Dear My Crazy Soulmate.” IU is credited as the writer of both songs, which are set to be part of her upcoming sixth full-length album.
The new release arrives exactly one year after her previous single, “Bye, Summer,” which also came out on September 10, 2025.
While details about the upcoming album remain under wraps, IU has already begun introducing its world through a series of intriguing teasers.
The concept for “Unknown Planet” takes listeners beyond Earth, with promotional materials featuring astronauts, planets, and paper airplanes. Its visual preview centers on a fictional platform also called “Unknown Planet,” where people around the globe connect with strangers and exchange fragments of their everyday lives.
Fans are then taken in an entirely different direction with “Dear My Crazy Soulmate.”
IU appears as a police officer in the song's teaser, stationed inside a police precinct when a window is suddenly broken. An elderly woman then shows up outside and extends her hands to be arrested, creating an unexpected mystery around the character and what led to the strange encounter.
The two tracks will also receive their own music videos, although fans will have to wait a little longer for one of them. The “Dear My Crazy Soulmate” music video arrived on September 10, while the “Unknown Planet” music video is scheduled for release on September 16.
This latest project once again showcases IU's penchant for turning her music releases into immersive stories. Rather than simply introducing new songs, the teasers establish characters, settings, and narratives that invite fans to look deeper into the world she has created.
The comeback is particularly significant as it precedes IU's first full-length studio album since LILAC in 2021. Although she has remained active in the entertainment industry through music, live performances, and acting projects, anticipation has continued to build for her next album.
For now, “Unknown Planet” serves as the first chapter. With another music video on the way and a sixth studio album still to come, IU's latest era is only beginning.
