Asia's Nightingale Lani Misalucha and her husband, Noli Misalucha, only have one word to describe the health scare they went through in 2020: hurricane.

In an interview on the "Updated with Nelson Canlas" podcast, Lani detailed the experience she and her husband went through when they both contracted and later recovered from bacterial meningitis, an infection affecting the membranes protecting the brain and spinal cord.

“Each time na nag-e-explain si Papa Nols sinasabi niya na kungbaga sa isang hurricane or isang bagyo. Dinaanan ka ng bagyo, nu'ng dumaan 'yong bagyo , umalis na 'yong bagyo, wala na 'yong bagyo pero meron siyang iniwan na damage parang ganu'n,” she said.

She added, “So nandito 'yong damage, wala na 'yong meningitis, 'yong bacterial meningitis pero may iniwan siyang souvenir.”

Lani first revealed what she and her husband went through during the Christmas special of The Clash in 2020. There, she mentioned how painful the condition was, and that she and her husband both lost their hearing.

In her podcast interview, the singer also shared her and Noli's fear of not being able to function properly because of their illness. She mentioned how Noli, who was a handyman, had to take 15 minutes to unscrew a screw, a task that usually takes only 5 seconds.

She also shared how her husband had to use a wheelchair to get around while Lani had to hold on to a helper or the wheelchair just to be able to stand and walk.

“Ang dami talagang mga shocks, how are we gonna do this? How are we gonna do that? As in talagang we really thought we won't be able to drive anymore,” she said.

“Iniisip ko 'Ganito na ba? Is it going to be like this for the rest of our years?'” she continued.

FACTS ABOUT LANI:

One of the lowest moments for Lani during that time was when she found out that she could no longer sing in tune as she needed her hearing to do so. Not only that, she and Noli could not even listen to anything or talk with each other as the singer revealed that all they heard was static noise.

“And I do not know why parang sensitive 'yong hearing namin in a way na sensitive sa mga high pitch, like 'yong mga kalansing ng kutsara parang ahhh sakit,” she said.

Lani also noted how their vision became blurry for a while and they even went to eye doctors only to find out that there's nothing wrong with their eyes. The swollen membrane pressing against the nerves in their brains might have caused it.

However, she confirmed that she's now back to her usual self and expressed how grateful she is that she and Noli recovered from the condition.

“And really, sa totoo lang we are grateful. We are just really grateful that we could still stand up,” she said.
