These 12 individuals have been given the Nobel Peace Prize over the past decade.

The Nobel Peace Prize is an extraordinary honor awarded to individuals and organizations who have “done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.”

Since 1901, it has been awarded to 109 individuals and 28 organizations. Its nomination and selection process is stringent and rigorous, an almost year-long process where nominations are kept secret from the public for 50 years.

Aside from the recognition of one's work, winning the Nobel Peace Prize also comes with a diploma, a medal, and a document confirming the cash prize, which is currently at a little over $1 million.
