For the first time Alfy Yan, nephew of the late actor Rico Yan, met the entertainment media at a press conference prepared for him by Viva Artists Agency earlier, December 10.

Alfy is the son of Rico's sister, Geraldine Yan-Tueres.

Here, Alfy recalled how he got interested in joining showbiz.

“I started trending back in 2020. At the time, I was only 15. Now that I'm 19, I've gotten the feel for it more and try to test the waters first and see where it goes.”

As a newbie artist, Alfy said he would like to follow in the footsteps of his late uncle.

“I think I'm trying to get the feel of how it is. Of course, following in his footsteps, he started with commercials while he was still studying. I guess, I'm just trying to test the waters.”

Alfy was able to enter showbiz with the help of Rico's ex-girlfriend, Claudine, who introduced the former to Viva Entertainment's big boss, Vic del Rosario.

Claudine, who was also at the press con, recalled that she thought of asking Alfy to join showbiz during a gathering with Rico's family,

“I asked him, 'Aside from baseball, what are you into? Do you wanna join showbiz?' Sabi niya, not really showbiz-showbiz talaga, but more on parang doing commercials and being a brand ambassador. Siguro what they call them, siguro influencer/actor na rin.

“So, nagulat sila na yun ang sagot ni Alfy kasi a few months back, ayaw pa niya. I don't know what happened. Then, diretso na, ang bilis ng pangyayari.”

For Claudine, Alfy joining showbiz is a sort of continuing Rico's supposed hope in his showbiz career.

She said about convincing Alfy, “Siyempre, ang daming nangungulila talaga sa pagkawala ni Rico. And everybody has been rooting for Alfy, matagal na matagal na. You know, sabi ko nga kay Geraldine and sa daddy niya, si Francis, thank you because noong pumayag sila, parang nabuhayan ng loob ang RYCB, Rico-Claudine fans, Rico Yan fans, even yung lola niya--lola's boy siya, e--parang nabuhayan ng loob. Ako, parang gusto ko lang maipagpatuloy kasi alam ko yung mga hope, siyempre, ni Rico. Walang puwedeng magpatuloy nun kundi si Alfy.”

Hearing Claudine's statement, Alfy admitted, “I guess at first it feels pressure, but I guess it's not so pressuring because I know that I'm also kind of doing my own thing.”

The newcomer is confident that no matter what, his family will always be supportive of him.

“They have been supportive throughout my entire life on anything that I've done, whether it be school, sports, and even this [showbiz]. I think they've been really supportive of my decisions and always try to help me.”

'Rico Yan's nephew'

Even as a child, Alfy said he was very aware of his uncle's status in showbiz.

“I always hear so much about my uncle like, the movies he was in, everything that he did. It is really nice to hear about it. It's really cool something like that in our family.”

For his part, the young Yan said “It's shocking that until now people talk about his late uncle. I didn't realize until later on how big his impact was. I guess, there's also a bit of pressure there. But I think it's really like a nice feeling, I guess, that people are still supporting. It's really heartwarming to see the support still up to this day.”

Now that has officially joined showbiz, is Alfy ready to face the public's reaction?

He answered, “I think I'm ready for them. It's just really how I think about those comments. I guess it's just really the mindset.”
