PBA legend-comedian Yoyong Martires dies at 77

|Former PBA star and comedian Rosalio 'Yoyong' Martires has passed away at the age of 77.
Yoyong's daughter, Moby Leah Martires, confirmed the sad news in a Facebook post on Tuesday, June 18.
In the said post, she described her father's life as “adventurous” and “colorful.”
Leah wrote, “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Rosalio “Yoyong” D. Martires. He has peacefully joined our Creator yesterday, June 18, 2024. He was surrounded by his family and loved ones during this difficult time. He lived a very adventurous and colorful life.”
She added, “A loving husband, a doting father, a caring grandpa, a self-made man, an Olympian, a prolific basketball player, a comedian, a devoted public servant, and a child of Christ. Difficult steps to follow, indeed. You served God, our country, and your fellow men. Rest in Peace, papa. We love you.”
Yoyong has made a name for himself inside the basketball court. He was part of the Philippine basketball national team that competed in the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, Germany.
The following year, the Cebuano-born player helped the country win the gold medal in the 1973 Asian Basketball Confederation Championships.
He played in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) for 10 years under the San Miguel Beermen, where he won two titles.
Gilas Pilipinas coach Tim Cone paid tribute to Yoyong via his post on X calling him as one of his heroes saying, “Yoyong Martirez, one of my heroes on the hardcourt growing up, passed away. RIP. Always remembered.”

Meanwhile, Mon Fernandez shared on Facebook his statement over the death of his beloved teammate. He said that his legacy as an athlete and public servant will serve as an inspiration to others.
“Rest in peace with eternal love, my dear friend and former national basketball team and San Miguel teammate, Pasig City Councilor and former Vice Mayor YOYONG MARTIRES.” Mon posted.
“You have served your constituents well. I will forever be proud of your accomplishments. Your legacy as a sportsman and as a public servant will remain an inspiration to many.
“Maayong pagpahuway, Yong!”
Yoyong retired from basketball in 1982 and pursued a career in show business after.
He was known to be an effective comedian who worked with several showbiz icons such as Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto, Joey de Leon, and Babalu.
Yoyong also dipped his toes in politics. He served as a councilor and vice mayor in Pasig City.
