Following the controversy surrounding their family, South Korean stars Lee Seung-gi and Lee Da-in have officially announced their decision to sever ties with the actress' parents.
According to a report by Soompi, the beloved actor-singer released a heartfelt statement addressing the couple's difficult decision in light of new allegations against his father-in-law.
"It is with a heavy heart that I write this message," Lee Seung-gi shared in Korean.
"Although my father-in-law was previously sentenced to a fine in the retrial regarding the ongoing allegations of illegal activities, he has recently been indicted again by investigative authorities for similar unlawful acts. As someone who had been waiting for the outcome based on trust within the family, I am devastated and at a loss for words over my father-in-law's wrongful actions."
Lee Seung-gi expressed deep regret for having previously spoken in defense of his in-laws without fully understanding the scope of the situation. He apologized to victims who may have suffered and to fans who had placed their trust in him.
"This incident has irreparably damaged the trust within our family, and after much deliberation, my wife and I have decided to sever ties with her family," he continued.
Lee Seung-gi concluded his message by promising to uphold his values and act responsibly moving forward.
"Once again, I bow my head in apology for causing concern and disappointment over this personal matter," he said.
The controversy centers around Lee Seung-gi's father-in-law, Lee Hong-heon, who was arrested on April 29, 2025, for alleged involvement in stock price manipulation related to the renewable energy company Quantapia.
This is not the first time Lee Hong-heon has been implicated in financial misconduct. In 2016, he was suspected of making tens of billions of won by artificially inflating the stock price of a company called COREBEAT. He allegedly did this by creating false public disclosures, such as claiming that Hong Kong-based capital would be investing at the time of a paid-in capital increase.
In 2018, he received a four-year prison sentence and a 2.5 billion won fine. The following year, he was acquitted on appeal. But in 2024, the Supreme Court ordered a new trial and found him guilty.
His wife and actress Kyeon Mi-ri was also found as one of the primary shareholders in the company.
