Sports stars, basketball players shock over death of Ateneo recruits Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili

The Philippine basketball community is still in shock over the heartbreaking news of the deaths of two promising players of the Ateneo de Manila University that happened at Dipaculao, Aurora on Monday, June 8.
In a statement released by Ateneo de Manila University, the school confirmed the death of Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili due to drowning.
The Katipunan-based school said, "The entire Ateneo community mourns the loss of Rene and Divine. The University extends its heartfelt condolences to their families, friends, teammates, coaches, and loved ones.
"We ask the community to keep them in their prayers during this most difficult time."
According to the official statement, the details of the wake and funerals are still being finalized in coordination with the families of Rene Clert and Divine.
In a recent press conference, the Aurora Police Provincial Office said that the drowning incident was "purely an accident."
Rene Clert Baterbonia (19) , who stands at least 6'4, was named Most Valuable Player in the 2025 Palarong Pambansa held in Ilocos Norte. He is also instrumental in leading the Davao Region in winning the boys basketball medal at last year's championship.
Meanwhile, the 21-year-old Nigerian Divine Adili helped in the Blue Eagles campaign in the UAAP Men's basketball season 88 competition. Ateneo finished with a 6-8 win-loss card, placing in the 6th spot.
