Nora Aunor - real name Nora Cabaltera Villamayor - first entered the Philippine entertainment industry via the singing competition Tawag ng Tanghalan, becoming a grand champion on her second attempt on the show. Before her win, she lived a life of poverty selling peanuts on buses and cold water at the Bicol Express train station.
After her Tawag ng Tanghalan win, Nora Aunor took on small musical parts in films before shooting to stardom through her love team with Tirso Cruz III. Popularly known as Guy and Pip, their love team was also famous for the doll Maria Leonora Theresa, which was gifted by Tirso to her during her coronation as the muse of the Sampaguita Family Club.
After a string of teen movies with Tirso Cruz III, Nora Aunor would transition to dramatic roles through movies like Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos, Minsa'y Isang Gamu-gamo, and Ina Ka ng Anak Mo. Her performance in Ishmael Bernal's Himala would cement her position as an acting powerhouse, with the film now considered one of the best Filipino films ever made.
Nora Aunor's showbiz career was also intertwined with Vilma Santos, the Star for all Seasons. While their fans would bicker with each other, the two would star in films together, such as T-Bird at Ako and Ikaw Ay Akin. The latter film is famous for its final confrontation scene, where Nora and Vilma spend more than three minutes not speaking a word.
Nora Aunor was frequently awarded Best Actress for her performances, sometimes resulting in a tie with other actresses. In 1985, she and Megastar Sharon Cuneta tied for Best Actress at the 1985 FAMAS Awards. Nora was recognized for her work in Bulaklak sa City Jail while Sharon was recognized for Dapat Ka Bang Mahalin.
While Nora Aunor only had one son with Christopher De Leon, the couple at the time adopted four children - Lotlot De Leon, Matet De Leon, Kiko De Leon, and Kenneth De Leon. In her post remembering her mother, Matet uploaded a picture of her and Nora during her wedding day.
In the caption to her post remembering her mother, Matet De Leon simply wrote the caption: “I love you mommy”.
Even in the 2010s, Nora Aunor was still being feted for her work. In 2012, she attended the Venice International Film Festival for the film Thy Womb, which earned her a Volpi Cup for Best Actress nomination. She was also awarded by independent critics with the Bisato d'Oro for best performer.
Nora Aunor was declared a National Artist in 2022, in recognition of her vast filmography of 170 films at the time and her acting prowess. The citation emphasized her 1990 grandslam, winning Best Actress in the Urian, FAMAS, FAP, MMFF, and PMPC for her performance in Andrea, Paano ba ang Maging Isang Ina.
In October 2024, Nora Aunor made an appearance on Boss Toyo's YouTube channel to have her Tawag ng Tanghalan dress assessed in order to raise funds for victims of Typhoon Kristine, which ravaged the Bicol region that year.
In his Facebook page announcing his mother Nora Aunor's passing, Ian De Leon wrote that she was the heart of their family, “a source of unconditional love, strength, and warmth.”
