Women athletes are leading the campaign of Team Philippines in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
After Hidilyn Diaz secured the elusive gold medal in the women's weightlifting 55-kilogram (kg) category, another Pinay punched her way to the final round-- Nesthy Petecio from Davao del Sur. The Filipina boxer beat Italy's Irma Testa in the semifinal round of the featherweight division last July 31.
According to several news reports, this will be the first time since the 1932 Los Angeles Games--89 years ago-- that the country has won multiple medals in the Olympics.
Nesthy brought pride to the country when she won the silver medal today, August 3.
She follows the footsteps of another boxing legend, Mansueto “Onyok” Velasco who won the silver medal for the Philippines when he competed in the light-flyweight division at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
