Rising P-pop group 1st.One didn't just wrap up a successful show, but was also honored with a National Cultural Treasure.
Last Sunday (January 18), all six members were surprised during their "All 1N Finale Concert" with authenticated copies of the Murillo Velarde 1734 Map, widely known as the "Mother of All Philippine Maps."
The turnover was led by Mel Velasco Velarde, chairman of the Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication (AIJC) and the NOW Group, who also spearheaded the historic map's return to the country.
"Tonight, this map is still alive in music, in movement. Isa-isa natin silang bibigyan ng award, " Mel Velarde said.
P-pop stars Ace, Max, Joker, J, Alpha, and Jayson each were awarded with a piece of the map based on their respective hometowns.
“Tonight, we hand you the Murillo Velarde 1734 Map—a symbol of who we are, and where we rise. I now bestow upon you the title, Guardians of the Soul of the Nation,” Velarde added.
The ceremony was further blessed by attendees, who echoed the phrase, "May the powers be with you."
Velarde previously donated the original map to the Republic of the Philippines, where it is now displayed at the National Library of the Philippines.
Carta Hydrographica Y Chorographica De La Yslas Filipinas, first published in Manila in 1734, is regarded by historians as the "Mother of all Philippine Maps." It was created by Spanish Jesuit Friar Pedro Murillo Velarde with Filipino collaborators Francisco Suarez (who drew the map) and Nicolas de la Cruz Bagay (who engraved it).
Last year, 1st.One was hailed “bearers of the map” as they led public engagements and the official map turnover to Sentro Rizal at the Philippine Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The P-pop group also revealed producing the song MYV (Map Your Vibe), which was dedicated to the map. They first performed the meaningful single on the global stage at the ROUND Festival, Kuala Lumpur.
The group sets out to carry the map with them as they embark on their Asia tour this year, UNA.
