Red days aren't the best days for women. Having your menstrual period can get frustrating, uncomfortable and stressful at times. But ladies can make these days bearable and more with the use of a menstrual cup.

A menstrual cup is a good alternative when we're on our period. It's a reusable and flexible funnel-shaped hygiene product made of silicone that we can use instead of pads and tampons.

While the image of using menstrual cups on our red days might make you feel overwhelmed and even grossed out, it offers a lot of benefits.

Multi-sport athlete and environmentalist Lee Ann Canals, who has been using a menstrual cup for at least three years, shares in an interview with GMANetwork.com why she made the big switch.

“Using a menstrual cup is very liberating. I feel better about my period and about myself when I choose it over a disposable,” she says.

You can feel good on your red days, too! If you still need more convincing, read on so you should know why you should make the big switch.

More freedom

Menstrual cups are inserted into your feminine area. It collects rather than absorbs blood. Because of this, you'd barely feel that you're even bleeding. You can do away with the sticky feeling when wearing napkins. You don't have to worry about leaks and stains, too!

Lee claims, “[Using a menstrual cup gives me] more freedom in activities. It used to be very difficult to do outdoor activities like biking and swimming during red days. But with a menstrual cup, I was able to finish a duathlon and a triathlon while on my period.”

Budget-friendly

A menstrual cup costs about Php500 to Php2,000.00. While this appears pricey, it's actually more affordable in the long run. Menstrual cups are reusable so it's just a one-time expense. It also lasts for at least two years, hinting on a lot of savings cut from buying napkins or tampons for monthly use.

Safer

Menstrual cups are generally regarded as safe. This product is made of silicone and is, thus, considered non-toxic. The chances of getting an infection are also very rare compared to using pads and tampons.

Since we use it in our intimate area, it goes without saying that you have to commit to keeping it clean too by practicing proper care before and after use.

Environment-friendly

The use of menstrual cups promotes a healthier environment, too! Menstrual cups are reusable and thus switching to this product produces less waste.

Lee shares, “the main reason I started using MCs is because of environmental reasons. Napkins aren't biodegradable and will last a lifetime in the landfill. Imagine how many pads you use in a month or in a year, all those napkins end up in a landfill. An MC will last for years.”

More familiar with your body

Menstrual cups make you more comfortable with your body, especially your intimate area. It also puts your mind at ease since it's an alternative that does good not only for your physical health but also for the environment.

Lee states, “The last reason I'm thankful for my MC is my deeper understanding of my body. Using a menstrual cup forces you to know your nether regions and not be scared of it.”
