Bayanihan Pulilan COVID19 relief initiatives

A group of youth professionals in Pulilan, Bulacan manages to extend help and assistance from the confinement of their own homes, thanks to the Internet.

As COVID-19 takes its toll, a group of 65 youth volunteers in Pulilan, Bulacan united and formed an independent youth movement called Bayanihan Pulilan.

It aims to help the indigents and frontliners in their municipality at the time of the enhanced community quarantine, brought about by the present coronavirus.

Bayanihan Pulilan started a donation drive for those hardest-hit by the COVID-19 crisis.

Furthermore, as an effort to alleviate the physical limitations imposed by the enhanced community quarantine, this non-partisan initiative offers free online public services such as medical consultation, legal aid, mental health support, dental consultation, medicine availability inquiry, art exhibit, store directory, bulletin board, and creative COVID-19 solutions.

"We are able to do this because Bayanihan Pulilan is composed of youth professionals such as doctors, lawyers, nurses, engineers, dentists, pharmacists, media practitioners, artists, architects, bankers, teachers, and businessmen and women, among others," said Bayanihan Pulilan's Aljo Dolores.

While going outdoors is highly discouraged to contain the spread of COVID-19, both its donation drive and free public services are done online.

"The Bayanihan Pulilan volunteers have never met in person since we started this initiative. We take advantage of technology to minimize the physical interaction among donors, volunteers, and beneficiaries," Dolores said.

"Cash donations are transferred through online banking, while donations in kind are picked-up from the donors and delivered to the recipients efficiently through the assistance of our LGUs," he added, explaining the process of donation and distribution of relief packs at the time of COVID-19 pandemic.

As of April 7, Bayanihan Pulilan has raised more than Php 300,000 worth of donations such as cash, food, vitamins, face masks, alcohol, and other essential supplies.

Through this initiative, the organization hopes to inspire other youth to do the same within their own locality.

"With the ECQ, we saw the need for local private sector initiatives that use technology to reach the indigents and frontliners in far-flung areas. While there are more-established organizations and movements, it might be difficult for them to reach out to the LGUs in remote locations due to the lockdown and checkpoints. Moreover, as the COVID-19 pandemic is a nationwide problem, the residents have no other option but to start a bayanihan within their own localities," Dolores concluded.

As of April 30, 2020, the Pulilan Municipal Health Office reported that the two confirmed COVID-19 cases in the municipality have recovered from the disease.

There are no known active cases in Pulilan at the moment.
