Marky Cielo is playing an opinionated agent who’s a little full of himself—a different character from the usual ones he plays. But why is he not content with how he’s doing? Text by Jason John S. Lim. Photos by Mitch S. Mauricio. For over two years, Marky Cielo has played a series of characters that has one thing in common: they love. Whether they love their parents (Encantadia), their siblings (Fantastikids, Boys Nxt Door) or their love team partners (Kaputol ng Isang Awit, Bakekang)—they all love. So how does he play a character that doesn’t depend on this emotion? Differently, Marky Cielo confesses. “Hindi ko pa napaglalaruan masyado.” starsThe young actor admits that he has long wished for an unusual character to play, and it seems he got his wish wit Troy—Agent Beat Box in Codename: Asero. “Maangas,” Marky describes him. But, he says, he’s not satisfied with how he is playing the character. “Sa sariki ko, hindi ko nakikita na nag-iba ‘yung character.” Admittedly, he doesn’t get to follow Asero as much as he would like, but Marky says that comparing Troy to his previous characters—he still feels the same. “Parang hindi ko siya napaglaruan ng maayos, hindi ko nagawa ng [mabuti].” But that can be just him being a perfectionist. Because, definitely, Marky can be seen doing something that’s extremely different from his previous roles: he’s playing his age! In fact, a little exuberance escapes Marky as he shares his experience in filming one of his earlier scenes. “Yung drifting, astig!” He says that though he did not get to watch the episode where it was shown, and provided that he was only riding and not actually driving—the experience was surreal. “Sabi kasi, babaril lang,” Marky explains, and he focused on that. But afterwards, “nakakaaliw—para siyang roller coaster.” starsHe’s also itching for some more action—because currently, Marky thinks Troy is only all-talk. He hasn’t shown his skills yet to earn some respect. “Light lang na job ng agent, kasi hindi ako [gaano] kagaling doon. Feeling si [Troy].” The actor says Troy’s redeeming factor lies in his curiosity—curiosity that has landed the lead character in hot water, time and again. Troy’s observation skills have put the spotlight on Asero time and time again. But, Marky says, revelation about Asero’s allegiance won’t be that soon coming. “Obvious naman, hindi naman sa part na ‘to malalaman kaagad. Parang masyadong early para malaman.” Right now, he adds, the game is on how Asero would escape Advocate’s and Troy’s scrutiny. Something Marky himself is excited to see how they’d go about: “Actually ako, aabangan ko pa rin yun eh. Hindi pa namin nagagawa. Aabangan ko lang kung paano namin gagawin. Abangan [na rin] nila yun!” Codename: Asero airs weeknights after 24 Oras, part of GMA Telebabad. Talk about the show at the iGMA Forums!
