Aiko Melendez, Marthena Jickain

Marthena Jickain on volleyball: "It's not just a sport. It's more of like a passion na rin for others.”

Fans of Aiko Melendez got to know more about her multi-talented and beautiful daughter Marthena Jickain in her recent vlog.

The incumbent Quezon City councilor uploaded on her YouTube channel a sit-down interview with Marthena where she talked about her new journey as a college student in Ateneo de Manila University and her intention to play for the school as a volleyball player.

Marthena, a Development Studies freshman in the Katipunan-based school, talked about her passion for volleyball. “Since now volleyball is now booming in the Philippines, actually, worldwide, sobrang laki ng face ng volleyball ngayon. And it's so nice to see throughout the years, it's not just a sport. It's more of like a passion na rin for others.”

She continued, “And the way na maka-inspire 'yung mga athletes ng kids like me. Like I remember starting volleyball when I was just eight. So, iba talaga 'yung impact ng sports.”

When asked by her mom who her volleyball idol is, Marthena immediately answered former Ateneo star setter Jia De Guzman. Jia is currently the team captain of the Alas Pilipinas national squad.

“Grabe, iba 'yung discipline niya, leadership niya on the court. And sana someday, it it's for me or if I work hard enough for it sana, I get to do that as well,” Marthena shared on watching Jia.

During her one-on-one interview with Aiko, the promising volleyball player expressed her intention to join the tryouts for the Ateneo varsity team. She also revealed that she is hard at work adjusting to her new position as a setter, since she previously played as a spiker.

“Definitely, it's a huge shift, pero I think it's all up to me naman with how I'm gonna adjust to it and adapt to the position. So, if gugustuhin ko talaga, I think there's no issue.”
