Filipina tennis sensation and world No. 31 Alex Eala paid tribute to her mom, Rosemarie “Rizza” Maniego-Eala, after her game against world No. 4 Coco Gauff at Indian Wells.
Just like Alex, Rosemarie was a former athlete and bagged a bronze medal in the 100-meter backstroke at the 1985 Southeast Asian Games.
Greeting her mom a happy International Women's Day, Alex said, “I also want to say Happy Women's Day to my mom, who is there in the stands.
“I want to thank her for being the amazing woman that she is and for helping me become the woman that I am.”
Alex also shared this message with women all over the globe: “Thank you to all the incredible women who paved the way and who have advocated for themselves and for other women.”
The Pinay tennis star advanced to the last 16 after Coco retired due to an injury in her left arm. Alex also wished Coco a quick recovery and said she hopes to see her compete again.
“I really hope that everything is well and that you will recover soon,” Alex said to her competitor.
Eala will need to defeat Czech player Linda Noskova to secure a place in the quarterfinals.
