Award-winning actress Anne Hathaway may soon reprise her iconic role as Mia Thermopolis, as a third installment of The Princess Diaries franchise is officially in development.
Fresh from buzz around her return in The Devil Wears Prada 2, Anne Hathaway says The Princess Diaries 3 is moving forward, with Adele Lim set to direct, and the long-awaited sequel “has to happen.”
In a recent profile by Harper's Bazaar, it was revealed that Anne has multiple projects lined up, including The Princess Diaries 3, offering a rare update on the much-anticipated film.
Adding to the excitement, Anne expressed strong confidence about the sequel during an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, saying, “We will make it. There's no way that cannot happen. It has to happen.”
News about the project has been scarce in recent years. The last major update came in October 2024, when Anne confirmed that the film had found its director in Adele Lim.
At the time, Adele shared her excitement in a statement, “As a diehard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I'm beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life. We look forward to celebrating its core tenets of female power, joy, and mentorship with audiences worldwide.”
Anne has also previously emphasized the importance of getting the sequel just right.
In a 2019 interview with Andy Cohen, she said she would only return if the project met high standards. “We love it just as much as you guys love it. It's as important to us as it is to you, and we don't want to deliver anything until it's ready. But we're working on it,” she shared.
The original The Princess Diaries (2001) and its sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004), became fan favorites, telling the story of an ordinary teenager who discovers she is heir to the throne of Genovia.
With Anne's continued involvement and renewed updates surrounding the production, anticipation is once again building for a long-awaited return to the royal world of Genovia.
