You've most likely heard your astrology-savvy friends rant about Mercury Retrograde. And if you want to understand why exactly they're blaming Mercury for their misfortune, then read on.

Mercury's role in astrology

In Roman mythology, Mercury is known as the messenger of the gods. And the planet Mercury pretty much plays a similar role in astrology. It rules communication travel, technology, and transportation.

So whenever Mercury goes retrograde or appears to move backward, expect disruptions in these aspects of your life.

What to expect

Mercury Retrograde is notorious for causing miscommunications, delays, and technical difficulties.

Classic examples are having typos or miscommunications in e-mails or text messages, and even phone calls.

You could also experience traffic jams, flight delays, getting sent the wrong item when you shop online, suddenly losing internet connection, or worse, your car or gadget may suddenly break down.

Mercury Retrograde is also known for bringing back someone from your past. You may either bump into them in unexpected places or they could suddenly slide into your DMs.

How to deal with it

Being forewarned is being forearmed. So now that you are aware of the possible inconveniences that Mercury Retrograde may bring, it's best to be proactive and vigilant.

Here are some dos and don'ts during Mercury Retrograde:

  1. Double-check anything you read or write to avoid miscommunications.
  2. Leave your house earlier if you have an important appointment to go to.
  3. Back up files on your laptop and smartphone.
  4. Check your car before hitting the road.
  5. Don't shop for electronics or any big-ticket items. There's a big chance that you might regret the purchase later on, or they would turn out to be faulty or not live up to the hype you were made to believe.
  6. Don't sign contracts or make agreements of any kind. It's likely that modifications or codicils might be needed later on. Or you might change your mind about it when Mercury goes direct.
  7. If you can't put off signing contracts, be sure to read the fine print and discuss anything that's vague.
  8. Have a Plan B. Anticipate inconveniences and plan ahead for possible solutions. For example, if you have an important file you need for a presentation, have a copy of it both in your hard drive and in your cloud storage.
  9. Don't start a new project, a new job, or a new relationship during Mercury Retrograde. In astrology in general, when any planet is retrograde, it's not an auspicious time or any type of beginnings.
  10. Be adaptable. When things don't go as plan, it's best to keep your cool and focus on how you can adjust to the current situation.

Can anything good happen during Mercury Retrograde?
