After doing telefantasyas left and right, Ian Veneracion is back to doing what he does best -- action! But what kind of action should we expect from him exactly? Text by Jason John S. Lim. In Joaquin Bordado, Ian Veneracion plays Jerome Apacible, an underground dealer who hides behind the persona of a successful businessman. “And eventually, ta-traydorin ko si Robin [Padilla]. Tapos malalaman niya ‘yung totoong pagkatao ko.” So far, Ian has only appeared in one action sequence, where he fools Joaquin into a sense of complacency only to backstab him -- a scene he spent inside a car. But when the producers come asking for Ian to return to becoming an action star, he was ready and willing. After having worked on drama and fantasy shows for quite a while now, Ian is more than ready to go back to the genre he first became known for: action. “I’m very comfortable with action, because nga before, I used to do ‘yung mga ganoong movies.” And having been revealed as a bad guy early on will definitely give Ian a lot of chance to take his character where the action is. But why exactly did he stop doing action? "Meron time before, when I was still in action movies, nagsawa ako.” Ian explains that after doing numerous action films wherein he was basically playing the same characters with different names, he definitely got tired of the genre. “Tapos, ‘yun nga, napunta sa drama. Recently, ‘yung mga fantasy pambata (ang) nauso sa TV. At least, iba naman. Tapos ngayon, (balik action na.)” He adds “Comfortable lang din talaga ako sa action.” Ian is outspoken that he’s tired of the generic good guy-bad guy characters of old, and so he’s very excited to do something out of the ordinary. He even explains that his Joaquin Bordado character has his reasons for being a bad guy! “Kaya ko tina-traydor si Robin kasi gusto ko si Iza [Calzado], na asawa niya.” Ian continues that Jerome was the first to meet Iza’s character, and he feels slighted for not being the one to end up with her. And he loves being the bad guy for a change. “The past year siguro, puro kontra ang ginagawa ko.” The actor says that he’s able to reveal parts of his personality that he only gets to reveal when he’s playing bad guys. “(And) you don’t get punished na nilalabas mo. You get to be mean pero you don’t pay for doing it.” "So, no complaints!” he ends with a chuckle. And there are two other things that Ian reveals getting excited about are working with Robin Padilla for the first time, and the story of Joaquin Bordado itself. “Kasi bagong show eh. Actually, hindi ko alam kung ano mangyayari, kung saan pupunta ‘yung character ko.” Ian becomes the manipulative and secretive Jerome every weeknight on Joaquin Bordado, part of GMA Telebabad.
