Bamboo new single Alon

After 11 years away from releasing new music, OPM icon Bamboo returns with a fresh sound, shares his take on AI and TikTok, and reveals talks of a potential musical project.

Filipino rock icon Bamboo is officially back in the recording studio after 11 years with his haunting new single "Alon," released under Filtered Music, a sub-label of PolyEast Records. But while his return to music marks a major milestone for OPM, the singer-songwriter dropped an even bigger surprise during his recent media conference: a potential leap to the theater stage.

When asked if there are plans to turn his discography into a stage musical—a trend that has swept the local theater scene in recent years—Bamboo candidly revealed that the idea has already been pitched to him by an international contact.

"A buddy of mine from New York who's also in music suggested it," Bamboo shared. "He said, 'Why don't we just do this? I think you'd be great.' I said, 'You're crazy, that's not my forte. I can't imagine myself doing that.'"

However, after his friend asked for a chance to develop the concept, Bamboo gave him the green light. More surprisingly, the rock star expressed open-mindedness not just about lending his catalog, but also appearing in the production himself.

"I told him to go. I decided I'm game... but it depends on the idea. We're not there yet, but from what he said, it implies that I'll be there as well," he teased with a laugh. "I want to be surprised."

Bamboo takes the stage alongside composer-keyboardist Ria Osorio and guitarist Ardie de Guzman, delivering a high-energy performance of his new single "Alon."

Evolving beyond OPM's comfort zone

Bamboo's willingness to explore theater aligns with his current mindset as an artist. "Alon," written by composer-keyboardist Ria Osorio and crafted alongside guitarist Ardie de Guzman, took years to refine because Bamboo refused to settle for a traditional band setup. Wanting a sound that reflected his personal listening habits at home, he stripped the track down to an atmospheric, electronic-infused arrangement.

"As an artist, you just want to grow. You go where you can grow," Bamboo explained. "This is about change, reinvention. I never pictured myself doing this for a lifetime being that same character all the way. You have to be like a chameleon, you have to develop, you have to evolve."

His return to PolyEast Records—11 years after 2015's Bless This Mess and 2011's No Water, No Moon—also required navigating a completely different OPM landscape. Bamboo admitted he relies heavily on his younger record label team to guide him through the modern era of music promotion.

"The young ones here are teaching me about social media and TikTok. I have no idea! I'm like, 'What the heck was that?'" he laughed. "They're giving me the 101 dummies version of explaining this whole thing... But I like it. It's fun, it's like you're creating a TV show to get eyeballs. I'm definitely leaning on them for that."

Addressing AI and keeping the OPM flame alive

Beyond social media, Bamboo also weighed in on the rise of Artificial Intelligence in the music industry. While he sees AI as a potential tool for innovation if used creatively, he emphasized the irreplaceable human element behind music.

"If it's used as a tool in the right way to create something that's going to blow me away, then I'm game," Bamboo noted. "But if it's just going to sound generic—like something I've heard a million times—I'm not into that. Plus, the broader issues like job losses and privacy concern me. I don't think the world is quite ready yet."

For Bamboo, the essence of music remains deeply rooted in raw human emotion and real-life experiences—something he channels both in "Alon" and his live performances.

As for how he keeps his iconic vocals and stage energy intact after decades in the industry, the singer credits a simple philosophy: "Good home cooking, a rooted life, and discipline. There's no secret sauce or magic ritual. I break all the rules—I even have a bit of wine after a gig. I just live with a lot of joy. I think that's the secret sauce."

"Alon" is now available on all major digital music streaming platforms nationwide.
