Meet Barbi Chan, make-up expert extraordinaire who will help mold the faces of the new generation of stars.
You've got the acting chops, the singing prowess, and the moves of a new dance idol—pero without a face to go along with the talent, mahihirapan ka pa ring sumikat. And this is where make-up expert Barbi Chan comes in, to help mold the faces of the new generation of stars. Text by Jason John S. Lim. Photos provided by GMA Network. stars"Lahat [ng tao] sinasabi [that] doing make-up, putting on make-up is a talent. It's not actually a talent—it's a skill. And skill can be practiced, can be developed." Unlike Douglas Nierras, Jai Sabas-Aracama, and Gina Alajar, Barbi Chan will not be honing talent with her mentoring. Her mission: to make sure that when the new batch of StarStruck hopefuls leave the competition, they know how to make themselves look good. Miss Barbi tells us during the interview that she sees StarStruck as a school for personality development. She explains that the kids will be coming in only armed with what they already know, and the perception of show business acquired as a viewer—as someone from the outside. And this season, the mentors will definitely be taking them through a crash course of what showbiz is—and how they can fit themselves in. "'Yung mentors kasi will be the ones to mold them into the performers, the persons they will be in the future," dagdag pa ni Miss Barbi. And unlike in previous batches where mentors come and go, StarStruck V's fifteen weeks of mentoring will, according to Miss Barbi, save the kids a lot of time. She tells us, "Coming from a professional point of view, lalampasan na nila 'yung mga trial and error." With regards to make-up, with the way the new batch will be seen physically, Miss Barbie says it will not just save them time, but money and confidence as well: "Hindi na mag-e-experiment ['yung mga bata], malalampasan na nila 'yung mga criticisms, 'yung mga pintas ng ibang tao—malalampasan na nila 'yung gumastos ng marami for nothing. Diretso na kaagad siya: 'Ito 'yung look na bagay sa 'yo; let's do it.'" To properly do her job, though, Miss Barbi is looking for patience and a willingness to learn in the aspiring artistas that she will be handling. "Kasi kung walang patience and the willingness to learn, wala tayong mararating." "Nag-guest na ako so many times to teach make-up—talagang mga bata [ang makakaharap] eh." And she says that as a mentor, she has to impart to these teens the importance of grooming one's self. As an artista, ika nga niya, you cannot go out looking like you've just woken up. "Because people will always comment on how you look like—and you're a public figure, whether you like it or not." "Once you join this competition, you don't have a private life anymore. So it is your responsibility na 'pag lumabas ka dapat ng bahay mo, you have to look at least presentable," diin niya.
Handang-handa na si Miss Barbi makaharap ang mga bagong batch of StarStruck contestants, pero inamin niya sa amin na even after all her previous StarStruck experience, hindi pa rin niya masasabing alam na niya ang gagawin niya. "Sa totoo lang, I think you can never really be prepared, 'cause I haven't met them [yet]." Miss Barbi says that while she has no idea who she will be handling this season, she has to admit that she's very excited—and challenged—sa kanyang pinasok through mentoring this batch's hopefuls. "This is a different level of my craft." Kung dati raw ay nagme-make-up lang siya, or nagtuturo lang, this time, "talagang you're going to modl someone and see their development from day one to the end of the competition! So I'm quite excited." Ang isa nga lang hiling ni Miss Barbie, "Sana, mababait silang lahat. Sayang naman kung hindi, 'di ba?" And if you think you've seen everything StarStruck can offer, think again. "Kahit naman every year siya ginagawa, every year is different," Miss Barbi says. And she argues that while it is the same contest and the same show, it never stays the same. "Because, every year there's more improvement, different people come in, different personalities." She adds, "And I think this year, it's gonna be more exciting because marami nang mga kasali from other countries." Miss Barbie says she's looking forward to the competition. "It's really gonna be a battle of wits, personalities, and of course, talent. So feeling ko, kailangan panoorin talaga itong season na ito. "Dahil nandito na rin kaming mga mentors," she finishes teasingly. Excited na ba kayong makilala ang Final 14 ng StarStruck V? Malapit niyo na silang makita!
