Bela Padilla when she had hormonal acne: “Doon ako nalungkot, I couldn't be my natural self.”

Bela Padilla is one of the local actresses who is known for having a clear skin. Looking at her face, one may think that she never really experienced any skin problem.

But Bela is just a like any normal person. In a recent interview with GMANetwork.com and other entertainment media, the actress revealed that she had the worst acne experience in December 2022.

“If you saw me, my whole face was just so full of acne and it was just so bad. First time ko nakita ang face ko na gano'n kalala. Hindi na ko makalabas ng bahay. I looked so bad,” Bela admitted.

“Everyone knows nga that I have clear skin, I eat clean, I don't smoke, I hardly drink nowadays, and I workout four to five times a day, so wala nang ipa-flush out yung body ko. It's flare up talaga.”

According to her, the breakout was one of her bouts against hormonal imbalance.

She said, “Alam n'yo naman, di ba, I have PCOS [polycystic ovary syndrome], I have hypothyroidism. I was diagnosed with PCOS 19 years old pa lang ako. Lahat ng babae sa family have PCOS, so I would have bouts talaga with hormonal acne.

“You know, it causes a lot of insecurities. When you're growing up in front of a camera o yung trabaho mo is always nakaharap yung camera sa mukha mo, it's really hard.”

Although Bela was in London when this happened, she still considered it a struggle because she couldn't go out without makeup.

She said, “Personally, because most of my life, more than half of my life ay artista ako, kailangan lagi kang presentable, kailangan lagi kang handang lumabas ng bahay. So, noong nangyari 'to, hindi talaga ako makalabas. Nagpa-panic ako, nagzo-Zoom ako sa kanila, 'Guys, hindi ko na alam gagawin ko.'”

The actress-director was talking about the team from iWhite Korea. At the time, the popular beauty brand was in contact with Bela for a business partnership, a skincare line called AeraxBela.

Bela continued, “Actually, doon ako nalungkot, kapag umaalis ako ng bahay on my own, kapag hindi trabaho, ayaw kong nagme-makeup kasi naiinitan ako.

“So, naka-jeans lang ako, sneakers, 'tapos nagba-bike lang ako sa London. Hindi ako nagme-makeup kapag lumalabas. Doon ako nalungkot, I couldn't be my natural self.”

Through the help of her new business partner, Bela was able to find a new skincare routine that helped her deal with the breakout.

“I really had to change my routine,” she said. “Some of the products in our line have specific ingredients that really addresses acne.”

BE GENTLE ON YOUR SKIN

One of the lessons Bela learned from this recent experience was to consistently follow a simple skincare routine.

“I was in London and pabalik na ako ng Philippines when we shot our campaign, I was still breaking out. Naka-two weeks ako sa Philippines and I was using all of our products consistently--toner, moisturizer, and facial wash--'tapos, nag-clear na nang nag-clear yung face ko. Consistency talaga, with anything naman in life.”

She also stressed about avoiding products that contain harsh ingredients which can ruin a healthy skin.

“I don't know why, parang misconception in the Philippines na kung gusto mo gumanda ang balat mo, magbabalat ka o magpi-peel ka. And usung-uso noong pandemic yung [rejuvenating] set.

“But that's really unhealthy. You're really breaking your skin barrier which you have to protect. Guys, biggest organ natin sa katawan ang skin, so we have to be gentle in taking care of our skin.

“I remember when I was a teenager, if I have a pimple or magbe-breakout ako, my mom or my titas would give me toners na talagang mamumula ako, hindi pwedeng magpaaraw, sobrang hapdi ng skin.

“Your body always tells you what it needs, e. So, I think with the line that we came up with, we're addressing common problems that are already existing with the gentler and kinder approach.”

Right now, Bela has regained her confidence to go out even without makeup especially she's going back and forth to London.

And if there's one skincare product she would always bring, Bela said it would be a moisturizer that is suitable to any kind of weather.

“Definitely, one thing I would bring in both climate [in London and Philippines] is a moisturizer. Misconception na kapag mainit, huwag kang mag-moisturizer. Actually, mas kailangan mong mag-moisturize kasi kapag nag-secrete ka nang nag-secrete ng oil, nagiging breeding ground siya ng bacteria. So, I make sure that I have my moisturizer here or in the UK,” she ended.
