Since graduating from ‘StarStruck’, Kris Bernal has been moving from one notable role to another. But after the very memorable Coffee from ‘Boys Nxt Door,’ what kind of approach is she using to become Sheila Mae? Text by Jason John S. Lim. Photos by Mitch S. Mauricio. Changing the Look “I tried using hair extension[s],” Kris Bernal reveals, explaining how she went from the short hair she had from Zaido as Amy to the longer one she’s now sporting in Dyesebel. “Kasi mas gusto nila [na a] different look for me, hindi mukhang Amy. So sabi nila, try lang ‘yung hair extension[s].” starsSo try the hair extensions she did. But she’s back to the shorter hair now. Kris says it’s because the extensions were very heavy. And they discovered, too, that the longer hair actually makes her look smaller. “[We tried] lang ‘yung hair extension[s]; better pala kung shorter.” Changing the Feel Kris describes her previous roles as “super arteng super [over-acting, but] super positive” and “seryoso lagi, boyish, tapos palaban.” Sheila Mae is actually a mixture of a little of both, and so much more. “Si Sheila Mae, spoiled brat,” she says, adding that Sheila Mae has some of Coffee's girlishness. “Pero siguro, toned down na lang.” But unlike Coffee, Sheila Mae has much more baggage: “Hate siya ng parents niya, ng kuya niya.” Kris describes her role as more dramatic than her previous ones. “Mas masalimuot ‘yung buhay ni Sheila Mae: mas maraming problema, mas madrama. [And] si Sheila Mae, super pabaya,” she says. No Change for Love? For Dyesebel, Kris is still playing opposite Aljur Abrenica—her love team partner from Boys Nxt Door to Zaido. It's a fact Kris couldn’t be happier about. “Like nung una kong na-meet ‘yung cast,” she says. Kris explains that during the press conference, she didn’t know anyone, and it was such a relief to have Aljur beside her.stars Although she’s made new friends with this new cast, Kris is still thankful for Aljur being there. “And super happy naman ako kasi at least nandoon pa rin ang love team namin, hanggang ngayon pine-pair-up pa rin kami,” she says. Where the love team will lead, though, she has no idea: “Sa stage na ‘to, hindi pa siya (Sheila Mae) nai-in love with Paolo.” Paolo is the character Aljur plays. “Sa ngayon, Sheila Mae is [just] getting along with Paolo. And mas nararamdaman ni Sheila Mae ang importansya niya with Paolo. So pagtagal, makikita kung paano mabubuo ang relationship nila,” she relates. Kris reveals that she is fond of Aljur’s character: “Kasi sobrang martyr si Paolo. As in super martyr niya! Kahit inaaway ko siya, todo suyo pa rin siya sa akin.” Changing Pace Dyesebel is the first time that Kris will be working with director Joyce Bernal—a director that Kris knows very well from the projects she had been associated with. As such, Kris reveals, “Nahihiya ako kapag nagkakamali ako. Nagba-buckle lang ako, nahihiya na ako.” But, she says, she found out that Direk Joyce was very nice: “Sobrang bait, tsaka patient siya.” starsKris has nothing but good words for the respected director, saying “'Yung [mga] eksena niya, pinapaganda niya. Hindi lang basta kung ano ‘yung nasa script.” Though, Kris admits, this is also what she fears most about the director. “Hindi ako sanay sa nire-revise ‘yung script. Eh mahilig siya mag-revise. Kaya kinakabahan talaga ako pag may bagong revision. Pero [kaya].” “Gusto kong katrabaho siya,” Kris concludes. “Hindi ko ine-expect na ganoon; akala ko strict siya, pero kahit nagre-rehearse kayo pwede pa rin kayo magbiruan. Masaya.” What can you say about the changes in Kris’ acting? Talk about it at the iGMA Forums! Not yet registered? Register now! Mars Ravelo’s Dyesebel airs every weeknight after Carlo J.
