American tech billionaire Bill Gates stunned the world when he announced on March 14 that he's stepping down from the public boards of Microsoft and Berkshire Hathaway, to dedicate more time to philanthropic priorities including global health. This shocking move comes days after the World Health Organization declared that the Coronavirus Disease has become a pandemic.
Bill Gates cleared that he's not completely staying away from Microsoft and Berkshire Hathaway. He emphasized that he only wanted to devote more time to his philanthropic works such as responding to global health crises like the Coronavirus Disease or COVID-19.
He further stated, “The leadership at the Berkshire companies and Microsoft has never been stronger, so the time is right to take this step.”
With the Coronavirus Disease or COVID-19 officially becoming a pandemic, there's an unmistakable urgency to develop an antiviral drug that can cure COVID-19. And Bill Gates seems to be wasting no time in helping respond to this.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation recently announced the launch of its COVID-19 Therapeutics Accelerator project, which is an endeavor that aims to speed up the research and development of a cure for COVID-19.
In an article published in their foundation's website, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation said: “We are joining forces with Wellcome and Mastercard to beef up our response--backed by $125 million in both new funding and money already earmarked to tackle this epidemic.
"The money will be used to identify potential treatments for COVID-19, accelerate their development, and prepare for the manufacture of millions of doses for use worldwide.”
