Last August 8, reigning Binibining Pilipinas beauty queens Gazini Ganados, Samantha Ashley Lo, Leren Mae Bautista, Bea Patricia Magtanong, Emma Mary Tiglao, and Aya Abesamis visited the kids of the Philippine Children's Medical Center (PCMC) to bring smiles to their faces.
Together with ice cream brand Dairy Queen, the queens helped out in the distribution of school supplies as well as exciting treats like pizza and ice cream to the 50 attendants.
They also joined in on the fun as they participated in the bubble show and magic show to help brighten the spirits of the children, who at a young age were already battling cancer and blood disorder.
In an exclusive interview with GMANetwork.com, Gazini Ganados, Bea Patricia Magtanong, and Samantha Ashley Lo shared why it's important for beauty queens to immerse themselves to causes similar to the one they attended.
The three beauties agree that it's important for them to use their voice and become role models for people who might want to help.
“Kasi it's very important for them to feel better and loved despite the illness they are having,” Miss Universe Philippines 2019 Gazini Ganados said.
“It's never easy to have that kind of illness so they need the support and the need for someone to be there for them and we're all happy that we are here to celebrate all of that.”
Bb. Pilipinas Grand International Samantha Ashley Lo added, “I think that we are role models so we should be doing more charity work like this.
“Being a nursing student, it's really cool to be back at a setting like this. And getting to be with the kids, despite having cancer, it's such a very sad thing. But the fact that they are able to smile today just speaks volumes.
“If kids can smile through cancer, then that's someone that I will look up to.”
Additionally, Bb, Pilipinas International Bea Patricia Magtanong said being immersed in causes such as this made her realize how important it is to have financial support from the government.
“I worked in Congress for two years and I handled hospitals in Catanduanes, my hometown, and importante talaga ang budget.
“The hospital will only be as good if the government allocates a budget for it.
“I heard kanina that the survival rate for this hospital was 16% lang before. And then the government started supporting them more, and siyempre mahal na magpa-chemo, since they were able to provide that service na through the help of our government, the survival rate got raised to 86% na. So that's really a big thing.”
The event concluded with a few words of wisdom from Gazini herself.
“When we came in we were hoping to bring a smile to their faces but it was the other way around -- they were the ones who made us smile.”
