There's a hidden treasure in Palawan that has yet to be discovered - San Vicente.
By MARY LOUISE LIGUNAS

Palawan is a world-famous tourist destination but there are still a couple of spots that aren’t given as much attention. One of which is San Vicente which carries pristine beaches and offers a relaxing island life.

From Puerto Princesa, San Vicente is a three to four hour bus or van ride. Professional biyahero Drew Arellano tries out several activities that can be done in the municipality.

Biyahero tip #1: Have breakfast in a treehouse

There aren’t five-star hotels here. Instead, there are resorts with cottages that offer breathtaking views. Ausan Beachfront Cottages and Restaurant, for one, serves breakfast in treehouses, giving you an outdoor experience like no other.

Biyahero tip #2: Go lato harvesting or catch lobsters

Sea grapes or lato could be found in the muddy parts of the sea. Drew went harvesting for them and suggested that they make amazing seaweed salads.

Adventurer that he is, Drew also went to catch fresh lobster with a local fisherman. He learned that buying seafood straight from them is a lot cheaper and more ideal than heading to the local market.

Lato: 50 PHP per kilo; Alimasag: 120 PHP per kilo

Biyahero tip #3: Swim in the Bigaho Falls

From Port Borton, a twenty-minute boat ride and a ten-minute walk can lead you to the Bigaho Falls, a 14-level waterfall that serves as a venue for fishermen and tourists to relax. Although only two levels can be seen for now, the cold water and fresh air provide a great ambience.

Swimming: Free

Biyahero tip #4: Try the mouthwatering tamilok

Tamilok is a wood worm that’s a famous delicacy in Palawan. These mollusks are found in the throngs of mangrove trees and have a sticky and slippery texture. After being washed, it is usually dipped in vinegar and serves as a good snack or pulutan.

Biyahero tip #5: Go island hopping

As in other parts of Palawan, island hopping is a must. There are a couple in the area which boasts of white sand beaches which are perfect for swimming and snorkeling. There’s also Luli Island which floats and sinks on different times of the day.

Island hopping: 700 PHP per head

The next time you plan a trip, think beyond the box and consider options that aren't as popular and mainstream. Places like San Vicente may surprise you with its simple lifestyle offering and an extraordinary experience.
