This message resonated deeply in the “Ask Boy Abunda” segment of CIA with BA, where Hong Kong performer Athena Alba asked the King of Talk what it really takes to win the hearts of the masses.
Athena began by asking Boy Abunda, who has worked with countless artists throughout his career, what qualities an artist should have to be loved by the public.
“Kahit hindi sa masa, kahit 'pag nasa entablado ka lang, importante na alam nilang gustong-gusto mo 'yung ginagawa mo,” Boy Abunda shared.
“I like artists who are hungry. Gusto ko 'pag kumakanta sila ng awitin, parang it's the last song they're going to sing in life. Bawat hinga, bawat tingin, bawat note ay ninanamnam,” he added.
According to him, aside from passion and hunger, artists must also work hard to earn the love of the audience.
When Athena asked how one can discover what's truly meant for them, Boy Abunda encouraged artists to explore.
“You go to as many genres as possible… so don't be afraid to experiment, to go on an adventure, looking for your musical identity,” he said, recalling his experiences managing various singers who eventually found their true sound through exploration.
Athena also asked how to stand out among many artists in the industry. Boy Abunda replied, “You have to discover that: 'What makes me different?' It can be physical, it can be in the music, it can be in the style, so kailangang meron kang identifying mark.”
He explained that every artist must have a differentiator -- something unique that sets them apart and makes people want to watch them.
In closing, Boy Abunda thanked Athena Alba for her thoughtful questions that reflected the journey of many aspiring artists. For him, the true key to success lies not just in talent but in hunger, heart, and hard work that shine through every performance.
CIA with BA, led by Senator Alan and Pia Cayetano along with Abunda, airs Sundays at 11:00 p.m. on GMA7, with replays on GTV every Saturday at 10:30 p.m.
