Fashion icon Bryan Boy thinks that it's good to have more Filipino celebrities in prestigious Fashion Week abroad.
“I think it's great. It's really great,” he said during an intimate interview with select entertainment media, including GMANetwork.com, on Wednesday, April 3, at the Viva Entertainment office in Pasig City.
He continued, “I mean, anything to make the Philippines is good. For me, to have the Philippines have a larger presence in Paris Fashion Week, or Milan or New York, I think it's a good thing for the country.
“I'm all about uplifting, you know, Filipino talent there. It makes us strong. You know, there's strength in numbers at least, unlike before, ako lang mag-isa! It's not even that, parang nakaka-sad na walang Filipinos.
"Now you see, there's Heart [Evangelista], there's Pia [Wurtzbach], and I met Anne [Curtis] last year, whom I love so much. I think it's a good thing to have more celebrities and there's more personalities.”
Bryan Boy attended his first Fashion Week in 2009 when designer Marc Jacobs invited him to his show in New York. This was also when the latter decided to name a bag after the Filipino fashion influencer, who was a blogger then.
Bryan also believes that this is a good representation of the country in the fashion industry.
“I want Filipinos to think that anybody with a dream can go to Paris Fashion Week. would have kept going. Especially. Anyone comes out there. A lot of people think it's really hard and, of course, it's hard. It's hard. Ultimately, the brands will invite you, but anyone and everyone can be there.”
Aside from being a celebrity, Bryan said there are other ways to become part of Fashion Week.
He related, “You know, you don't have to be an influencer or celebrity to be a guest. There's so many things you could do to be able to affect fashion. And you know, you've got to work as a PR, you can work as a staff, you can be a press, you can be an editor, you can be a buyer.
“You know, being an artista, a socialite or an influencer is not the only ticket to go there. Don't forget, Fashion Week is a business. It's a real business. It's not naman na parang rampahan lang. You know, it's all about supporting the designers. It's all about supporting the atmosphere. I mean, we need to sell clothes. It's work, it's a lot of work.”
Meanwhile, the 42-year-old fashion influencer dodged the question about intrigues involving local celebrities attending Fashion Week abroad.
Instead, he stressed, “Ang sa akin lang talaga, there's space for everybody, that's all.”
Then, he said in jest, “You know, bahala na sila magsabunutan. I'm all about world peace.”
In conclusion, Bryan Boy reminded showbiz mongers, “The stars of Fashion Week, don't forget, are the designers. These are the people [who] spend six months, slaving away and working hard to put up a collection. So, this is the star of the show. It's not the guests, it's not the celebrities. It's really the designer, their work and their craft. People seem to forget that.”
