Carlo Paalam is now within striking distance of getting that life-changing gold medal in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics after he won via unanimous decision against Tanaka Ryomei in their semifinal bout in the men's boxing flyweight division on August 5.
Paalam, who used to scavenge in the landfills of Cagayan de Oro as a kid, was overwhelmed with emotions after his huge win.
He posted on Instagram: “Thank you so much po lord I love you po iba ka talaga lord.”
Olympic medalists Hidilyn Diaz and Nesthy Petecio took to social media to celebrate the success of Carlo.

Standing in the way for Carlo to achieve Olympic glory is Great Britain's Galal Yafai, who will go all out in their gold medal match.
So far, the Philippines has surpassed the previous medal haul in the 1932 Los Angeles Games - the most successful campaign for the Philippines so far.
Hidilyn's historic gold medal win in weightlifting last week motivated the other Pinoy athletes to deliver. Now, the Philippines has a silver medal courtesy of Nesthy Petecio and Eumir Marcial bronze medal in the men's middleweight boxing event, too.
