Reigning IBF Junior Flyweight champion Johnriel Casimero defends his title against Mexican challenger Felipe Salguero on October 26, Saturday, at the Makati Coliseum.
The bout dubbed, “Laban ng Lahi: Tapatan ng Tapang,” will be aired on GMA Channel 7 at 10:15 p.m. after
Celebrity Bluff. GMA’s flagship AM station DZBB 594, on the other hand, will air a live blow-by-blow account of the fight beginning 4 p.m.
Casimero rose to popularity after he won the IBF interim light flyweight belt against Luis Lazarte in Argentina in 2012. The post-fight was marred by a big brawl instigated by the hometown crowd.
In his first defense of his junior flyweight title in August 2012, Casimero beat Pedro Guevarra of Mexico via split decision. The Filipino champion floored Guevarra in the opening round.
Casimero successfully defended his title for the second time versus WBC Latino light flyweight champion Luis Alberto last March.
The Filipino boxer from Cebu, with 18 wins (10 KOs and 2 losses), is raring to step in the ring versus Salguero (18 wins with 13 KOs, 4 losses and 1 draw), whose last victory was in January 2012 when he stopped journeyman Carlos Melo in five rounds.
Salguero lost via unanimous decision against Donnie Nietes for the WBO light flyweight title and to Luis Rios of Panama in an IBF title eliminator in the same year.
