Chinese New Year outfits

If you have no idea what to wear yet on February 12, here are a few of our picks to help you out.

Chinese New Year or Lunar New Year is just around the corner, which means it's time to bring out the reds and magnetize good luck.

The Year of the Ox will commence this February 12, which means it's overlapping with Valentine's Day and gives us fashionistas even more reasons to dress up and celebrate the back-to-back celebrations.

Even though there will be a lot of social distancing and spending most of the holidays at home, that's not an excuse to tidy up and doll up for the occasion.

So here are some ideas to bring delight (and luck) to your outfits this year -- we all need it.

1. Cheongsam

One of the most traditional ways to dress for the Lunar New Year is to wear a qipao or a cheongsam frock.

While there are many traditional versions out there, you can opt for more modern versions that take inspiration from the dress.

2. Wear gold

While Lunar New Year symbolizes a new beginning for everyone, it also emphasizes the importance of family and those close to you.

To honor that pledge, you can opt to embellish your frock with more traditional touches like that of your grandmother's ring or your mother's favorite necklace.

Plus, little touches of gold never hurt anyone.

3. Avoid black and white

While everyone loves the colors black and white because it flatters most body shapes, unfortunately, these are the colors you must never wear during the Lunar New Year because these are worn during funerals.

Black is usually associated with death and depression, while white is a more auspicious color often associated with mourning and funerals. So go all out with your hues, try color-blocking, and experiment with patterns this Lunar New Year.

4. Go for tailored

We may be celebrating the Lunar New Year indoors, but that doesn't mean you have to dress sloppy!

This means no ripped jeans of any sort, even if it's what's on-trend. That said, damaged clothes are also a no-no since it may attract bad luck.

5. Wear new underwear

Clothes also mean underwear! Make sure to invest in good new pair this coming year. And if you're not the type to wear something red from head-to-toe, you can take this moment to invest in a few red pairs of underwear to draw luck to you, in a more discreet way.

These are some of the things you want to keep in mind to keep the celebrations going. While traditions are still present, the event has definitely become more modern, so it's surprisingly simple to find an outfit.
