Tall, lean and handsome Marco Alcaraz is surely fit for dramatic roles. He unravels the truth behind being Jonas, Billy’s best friend on My Only Love. Text by Alula Love M. Dela Cruz. Photos by Mitch S. Mauricio. The last time we saw Marco on the tube was in Fantastic Man where he played the unearthly hooded creature named Ivan. After his short lived weekend stint, he returns to his Dramarama roots as Billy’s (Mark Herras) rich best friend, Jonas. Marco says he’s extremely happy with his comeback to the afternoon soap arena with a very different role from his previous Sine Novela gig in Pati ba Pintig ng Puso? “Si Bien kasi doon poor, dito rich naman ako. Doon I’ll do anything for love, dito medjo nang-aagaw na konti,” he notes when we interview him on the set of My Only Love. What can come between two guys? A girl, of course! So you can guess that Jonas isn’t just Billy’s best friend but also his rival, “Pag wala si Billy [pumo-porma] ako kay Trixie (Bianca King). May mga scenes dito na akala ni [Trixie] si Billy ang nagpadala ng mga gifts niya, hindi niya alam ako pala!” Jonas may seem like a snake, but Marco defends that his character has his reasons why he’s making his move on Trixie. “Kasi alam ko rin na ang gusto talaga ni Billy ay si Cindy (Rhian Ramos).” Marco also jokingly remarks that his character is a little flirtatious when interacting with Trixie. “Malandi yung character ko, mahirap yun ma-portray ah,” he laughs. Despite this dilemma on love, Jonas is still a real friend to Billy: “Tunay pa rin ako na kaibigan dito. Dahil galing sa hirap si Billy, ako [pa rin] yung nagtuturo sa kanya sa negosyo.” Playing the sneaky best friend isn’t the only thing that Marco finds challenging. Playing the rich friend has its own set of obscurities, “Sa clothes pa lang, dapat pang-mayaman. Magastos siyempre kasi dapat pang-mayaman na mayaman. Eh, hindi naman tayo mayaman, average lang.” Jonas may be Marco’s most despicable and tricky role to date, but it’s all worth it as long as he gets to entertain.
