Choosing the right furniture, including the style and construction that can stand the test of time, can be tricky. For some, it can induce stress and anxiety because they don't want to invest a lot of money only to find out it wasn't the furniture they were looking for.
So whether you purchased a home in the province or a condominium here in the Metro, you need to follow some important shopping basics in order to make good decisions when choosing the right furniture for your home.
We sat down with design duo Carlos and Emilie Garcia of GT Design Architects to help us guide you in the process and share with you their tips and tricks to ace-ing your interior design game.
Pick a theme
“Designing will be much easier if you choose furniture that compliment each other,” says Emilie.
By picking a theme - whether contemporary, casual, country or eclectic - it will give your home the consistency it needs to look a lot more harmonious.
Emilie also suggests “going through each room and its details like picking the same shade, color tone, and even the finish.”
Define your needs
Secondly, Carlos says to think about everything you and your family need and how it can make your life more comfortable.
He says, “For example, you and your significant other will probably need a large bed. And if you have kids it makes more sense to have two single beds.”
Emilie also adds, “it's important to consider the purpose of every room. If it's for work then it should look different from your bedroom.”
Your lifestyle should also play a part. If you have pets or kids then maybe it's not a good thing to buy a pricey leather sofa.
Consider the layout of each room
Every room has its own unique measurements so it's best to think not only about the style but also the size and scale of each space. That's why architects and interior designers are also important as they can guide you at which fits best for each of your room.
Choose your focal piece first
Build a foundation based on the anchoring pieces first.
For example, a sofa in the living room and then a bed in the bedroom. And then you can “finish off the rest of the room by working around that piece,” Carlos says.
Emilie adds, “You can also opt not to have matching sets so try to have fun and mix things up.”
Remember, a piece of furniture is like an investment piece for your home. And just like fashion, it says a lot about who you are - so choose wisely. What you love now may likely be what you still love in the future.
Other tips
Keep in mind that the pieces you find might not necessarily be the right fit for your home. So keep in mind these four things: durability, function, necessity, and aesthetics.
But the most important of them all is that you should enjoy what you bought but make sure to balance it with objectivity. So measure each room and really look at the space and how you want to use it.
Happy shopping!
