David Archuleta

Find out what inspired David Archuleta to write his newest single 'Rather Be Lonely'

International pop singer and former American Idol finalist David Archuleta is known for his chart-topping love songs like "Crush" and "Something 'Bout Love." However, his recently released single, "Rather Be Lonely," is about fear of getting hurt and falling in love.

In his interview on the Updated with Nelson Canlas podcast, David shared how the song is mostly about the trauma one received from being hurt in the past, and how he's afraid of getting hurt again by falling in love.

David explained, “I think a lot of times you have wounds from your past that still hurts you and you feel like you need to protect yourself from other people and from love from relationships. It can feel scary because of like, what if I get hurt again?”

The international singer admitted that it's “a bad way of thinking” for someone, especially if they already have someone who genuinely cares for them.

“You still have work on yourself that it's like 'You know what? I don't think I'm ready to receive this,” David said.

The former American Idol star also shared that he had been in the same situation once wherein he wasn't ready to receive the support and love of a person, saying that “it brings too much triggers too much in me.”

“I don't know what that is and I need to have some more work to understand why I get triggered from intimacy. And being close to someone. And building a relationship with them. I don't, you know the song says I don't know why I keep doing this, but like I feel like I need to end this, because intimacy is scary,” David explained.

David admitted that while he didn't know why intimacy was scary for him, he would rather be lonely than face the anxiety brought about by being in a relationship.

David also revealed that "Rather Be Lonely" was written with a combination of his current state of mind and his hurtful past experiences.

“I wrote the song last year, and I released it this year. So everything I write I feel for the most, everything I've released over the last 10 years has come from real experiences,” David said.

He added that the upcoming songs that he will be releasing will be more fun, playful, and while it may be based on a true story, “not all of it is true.”

“Just to play around more as like as a creator and an artist and performer. But yeah, there's always a truth to my songs. Even if it's 50 percent or 100 percent,” the singer said.

However, David clarified, “'Rather be Lonely' is I would say is the 100 percent [true] though.”

“I'm in a better place now,” he added.
