David admits that his decision to take a step back from showbiz was partly due to his unsuccessful bid in the last local elections.
After keeping a relatively low profile for more than a year, David Chua is slowly making his way back into the showbiz radar—and a cryptic birthday greeting for a mystery woman has certainly caught attention.
The actor, director, and Philippine Air Force reservist recently sparked curiosity among his followers after posting a brief birthday message on Instagram that read, “Some views are better shared. Happiest birthday, Moretti!”
The post immediately had showbiz watchers wondering about the identity of “Moretti,” especially given David's reputation as a ladies' man throughout his career. He has previously been linked to several actresses and beauty queens, including Devon Seron, Cristine Reyes, Shaina Magdayao, Jackie Gonzaga, and Kelley Day.
With questions surrounding the woman in his post, David eventually revealed her identity—but remained careful when it came to defining their relationship.
“Her name is Sofia Moretti. She's a New York-based interior designer.”
According to David, he and Sofia first met in New York in 2022 through a mutual friend at the SOHO International Film Festival.
“We met through a mutual friend at the SOHO International Film Festival in New York in 2022. It wasn't romantic at the beginning. Over the years, the friendship survived different countries, different circumstances, and long periods apart. We share a love for art, design and travel, so there had always been a natural connection.”
So, are they now romantically involved?
David offered a careful answer: “As for what we are now, I'd describe it as two people reconnecting and seeing where this connection takes us this time around.”
Whether this could develop into another long-distance relationship remains to be seen. For now, David appears more interested in talking about what has been keeping him busy away from the spotlight.

Why David stepped away from showbiz
Meanwhile, David admitted that his decision to take a step back from showbiz was partly influenced by his unsuccessful bid for a Manila councilor post during last year's midterm elections.
“I must admit that losing my Manila councilor bid during last year's midterm elections had a lot to do with it. After that, I decided that it would do me better to just lie low, even in my showbiz career. It was coincidental that our TV comedy, Good Will, was ending its fifth season last year as well.”
Despite taking a break from the limelight, David did not completely walk away from the entertainment industry.
He continued his directorial work for a local show while remaining at the helm of his Dark Carnival production house.
