We all secretly hoped it would be his first single, and yesterday in “SOP,” he officially granted our wish during the launch of his self-titled debut album! Text by Jillian Q. Gatcheco. Photos by Mitch S. Mauricio and Connie M. Tungul. “I'm lying alone with my head on the phone, Thinking of you till it hurts...” Yup, that’s right! Dennis Trillo -- award-winning actor and commercial model -- is now officially a recording artist! Who could forget his appearance in a much-celebrated TV ad a few years back where he crooned the Air Supply hit song All Out of Love? This humble heartthrob admits that he’s releasing this single as a tribute to the commercial. “Siguro na-associate lang ‘yung song sa akin dahil ginamit dun sa commercial, and parang tribute doon, sinama na rin namin sa album, kasi kahit papano, malaki nagawa ng kanta na ‘yun, very memorable para sa akin, kasi isa sa mga biggest breaks ko ‘yun in terms of TV commercials.” stars Does it sound exactly like the one in the TV ad? “Iba. We witnessed this different, “raw” version first-hand during the taping of his guest stint in Pop Star Kids where he sang it with Kyla, the R&B Princess. As expected, everyone fell in love not only with the song, but with the performer as well! “Tunog banda” characterizes Dennis’s taste in music, as his idols belong to the alternative rock genre such as Switchfoot, Incubus, Coldplay, John Mayer, and E-heads. He describes this album as “experimental,” saying that it doesn’t have a distinct sound unlike most bands nowadays. Instead, he has a little bit of everything in its 12 cuts, consisting of four revivals, seven originals, and one bonus track – an acoustic version of “All Out of Love!” Crooning for a girl Dennis shares that the song closest to his heart is “Lumilipad,” and he even gave us a sneak preview of how it sounds like! After clearing his throat, he started to belt out, stars “Ikaw ang sinisigaw ng puso ko, Ang sanhi ng aking pagbabago Ikaw...” How about a song he’d sing for a girl? “Dalawa, eh,” he replies. He continues, “’Yung isa naman, pag senti mood ka, medyo malungkot, ‘yung ‘Kung,’ composed by Odette Quesada. Iba-iba, eh! Siniguro namin na iba’t-ibang sound ‘yung maririnig mo dun.” Dennis’ album is released under IndiMusic, the recording company set up by tune titans Regine Velasquez and Ogie Alcasid. Dennis says that he’s so happy to be managed by Ogie and Regine, especially since “grabe ‘yung pagtitiwala na ibinigay nila sa akin. Sobrang swerte.” Under pressure But admittedly, he feels much pressure due to people’s high expectations of him. “Medyo nakakatakot din, pero kailangan lang mag-isip ka ng paraan how to sustain or maintain lahat (ng blessings), para hindi mawala lahat kaagad, di ba? Kailangan maalagaan nang husto.” stars While there are those who support Dennis’ new endeavor, there are others who backtalk about how he doesn’t deserve to be a recording artist, and how he should’ve just stuck to acting and modeling. What does he have to say about that? Aside from Regine and Ogie’s trust, Dennis shares that what’s really inspiring him to push through with this project is the support given by his fans. On March 12, Dennis will have a press launch for his album at the Virgin Cafe in Timog.
