How does Derrick react to bashers?

Kapuso singer-actor Derrick Monasterio revealed one of the comments that hurt him most throughout the six years of his career so far.

“[During] my second year in show business, I bought my car. That’s the main investment that I bought with my money. They said na the car that I bought is from a gay benefactor. It hurts lang kasi you worked hard for it tapos may ganung masasabi 'yung iba,” he shared.

Although it affected him, Derrick reminded himself that he doesn’t need to worry about what others will say as long as he’s on the side of the truth.

“I didn’t mind it kasi if you say something about it, parang guilty eh. That’s the law of criminals. [If you defend yourself so much], guilty eh. Of course, maaapektuhan ka but not to the point na you’ll fight the basher,” he added.

As a young star in the social media generation, he believes that the tools provided online should be used in a positive way.

“Social media nowadays is the most powerful thing so just think before you say [something]. Watch your words and don’t mind the negativity,” he pointed out.

In his own way, Derrick hopes to influence the over hundred thousand social media followers he has.

“I’ve always wanted to become a leader… an influencer. That’s why we’re celebrities eh. Our power is to influence people. That’s why we have those followers, ‘di ba? Para mang-influence ng tao kasi I really do believe na you can change someone, you can [inspire] a lot of people to do good pero [of course] it has to start with yourself,” he declared.

One of the avenues he has chosen to express his beliefs is through his participation in the Bloggers’ Style Camp 2016 that rejects cyberbullying. Because he has experienced it himself, he hopes to open others’ minds about its dangers and how encouragement and kindness can positively impact others.

“[To those who are bullied, I want to] tell them na don’t hate yourself ‘cause you’re different. That’s your gift eh. God made you different for a reason. Try to look for that thing that will set you apart from others [and don’t be ashamed of it],” he ended.
