The production of Netflix's Emily in Paris has been struck by tragedy following the sudden death of crew member Diego Borella, who was serving as a third assistant director. He was 47.
Borella collapsed on Thursday, Aug. 21, while the series was preparing to shoot a scene for its fifth season inside the historic Hotel Danieli in Venice, Italy. Emergency responders attempted to revive him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. According to La Repubblica, the cause was a “sudden heart attack.”
Paramount Television Studios, which produces the series, confirmed the news and paid tribute to Borella in a statement shared with The Hollywood Reporter.
“We are deeply saddened to confirm the sudden passing of a member of the Emily in Paris production family,” the statement read. “Our hearts go out to the individual's family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”
The loss comes just days after Netflix released first-look images for the upcoming season, which will debut on Dec. 18. Season five continues the story of Emily, played by Lily Collins, as she navigates new professional responsibilities and complicated romantic entanglements.
“Now the head of Agence Grateau Rome, Emily faces professional and romantic challenges as she adapts to life in a new city. But just as everything falls into place, a work idea backfires, and the fallout cascades into heartbreak and career setbacks. Seeking stability, Emily leans into her French lifestyle until a big secret threatens one of her closest relationships. Tackling conflict with honesty, Emily emerges with deeper connections, renewed clarity, and a readiness to embrace new possibilities,” Netflix revealed in its official synopsis.
Returning cast members include Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, Ashley Park, Lucas Bravo, Samuel Arnold, Bruno Gouery, William Abadie, Lucien Laviscount, Eugenio Franceschini, Thalia Besson, Paul Forman, Arnaud Binard, Minnie Driver, Bryan Greenberg, and Michèle Laroque.
