Dingdong Dantes

Instead of proposing a ban on foreign productions, Dingdong Dantes said, "Let's take inspiration from their best practices."

Dingdong Dantes expressed opinion on how to further make local entertainment be more competitive with other countries.

Comparisons between Korean dramas and Filipino teledramas have been the talk of town lately following Senator Jinggoy Estrada's plan to propose a ban on K-dramas.

In one of the Senate hearings recently, the actor-politician said, "[M]insan pumapasok sa aking isipan na i-ban na itong mga telenovela ng mga foreigners at dapat ang mga artista nating Pilipino talagang may angking galing sa pag-arte ay 'yun naman dapat ang ipalabas natin sa sariling bansa natin,”

In a statement sent to GMANetwork.com, the Kapuso Primetime King weighed in on this issue and said that the recent innovation and digitization of TV and movies, films and artists are compared globally and that the comparison is inevitable.

In connection to this, Dingdong also believes that Filipino talents are also world-class.

"I have belief in the capacity of our local talent that if given the proper tools--malayo ang mararating pa natin,” he said.

On the other hand, he agree with the statement of Congressman Joey Salceda, which is to copy the “economic strategies that gave rise” to the popularity of Korean Dramas or K-Dramas instead of banning them. He also highlighted the need to support local producers and talents.

His statement read, "I agree will Cong Salceda that we should take inspiration from the economic framework of their entertainment industry without copying the creative output. We definitely should learn many things from what they have accomplished. They are doing a whole of country approach in supporting the arts, and that's something that we can also do. Let's take inspiration from their best practices.

"We can begin by empowering producers by giving tax breaks. Let start by strengthening and streamlining Govt agencies which are directly in touch with the Creative Industry. Let's continue empowering our local artists, because truly--pang world class ang talento natin.

"While we love them [K-dramas], let's continue to have faith in our own, by loving our own as well."

Aside from Dingdong, other celebrities and personalities in the industry voiced their comments. This includes GMA-7's creative consultant Suzette Doctolero, who said that the government should invest in the local TV/Movie Industry.

Kapuso actress and comedian Pokwang said that while the sentiments of the senator are well and good, it would be best to copy how the Korean government supported their entertainment industry instead of banning them in the country.

Meanwhile, Parokya ni Edgar frontman Chito Miranda said that banning foreign shows and acts is not the solution and that coming up with one is for the people to support the industry by “earning” the support.

Dingdong confessed that he and his wife watch K-dramas. Aside from this, the celebrity couple have been the lead stars of a couple of local adaptations of Korean series such as Stairway to Heaven (2009) and Endless Love (2010). He also starred, alongside Jennylyn Mercado, in the local adaptation of the hit Korean series Descendants of the Sun (2020). In 2021, Dingdong was one of the lead actors of the local adaptation of the Koream movie titled A Hard Day.
