Flavors of Hokkaido

These flavorful and hearty Japanese dishes from Yuki will certainly make you happy at the end of your meal!

Tucked away in the busy street of Makati is a quaint Japanese cafe and restaurant called Yuki: Flavors of Hokkaido offers all-day Japanese eats and delights that will make any taste bud happy.

Derived from the Japanese term “yuki,” meaning “happiness,” its founders built the place with the idea of treating their customers with great food and will leave their restaurant with a smile on their faces.

Marketing associate Micah Limjoco tells Pop Talk, “'Yuki' basically means happiness in Japanese, and that's actually the feeling our founders want their customers to feel when they dine inside the cafe.

“It's pretty budget-friendly here considering that our normal price range is around PhP 250 to PhP 350 per person. Our interiors are quite cozy because it has this all-white simplistic design, and we play the usual coffee shop music.”

She adds, “Like the name of our restaurant, we want people to feel happy and warm whenever they're here.”

In the episode, host Tonipet Gaba invited Chef Gino Gonzalez to taste what Yuki: Flavors of Hokkaido offers their customers during the new normal.

Will it fare this culinary artist's taste buds? Check out his reviews below:

1. Beef Sukiyaki - ★★★★
Price: Php 390.00

What is it: Sukiyaki is a dish consisting of thin slices of meat, tofu, and vegetables cooked in soy sauce and sugar.

Chef Gino's verdict: “Yung sukiyaki is very nice. I really like it. Actually, maganda 'no kasi, I think I could give it a good chance by heating the soup well. The soup is really nice, the broth is nice, and it's not too sweet.

“Kasi 'pag sukiyaki 'yung iba masyadong matamis. It's just the right amount of sweetness. Maganda rin 'yung beef na ginamit, but a big plus is that they used legit shirataki noodles. Hindi sotanghon ang ginamit.”

2. Shrimp Rice Gratin - ★★★★
Price: PhP 320.00

What is it: A white sauce over pilaf baked dish that is perfect during cold rainy days.

Chef Gino's verdict: “I like the Japanese concepts ng mga ganito, mga baked rice. They combined the rice with yung Bechamel o white sauce, layered with the nice melty, bubbly cheese. Talagang very comforting, and it's still delicious kahit takeout. Parang malaking plus factor na masarap pa rin kahit take out na.

“Dapat lang siguro 'yung instructions nila naka-indicate kung paano iinit sa oven or toaster, kasi dito nakasulat na microwave, e. Pero if not for that, napakasarap pa rin n'ya.”

3. Mapo Tofu with Rice★★★★★
Price: PhP 260

What is it: A popular dish, originally from China, with spicy beef and rice. The dish was popularized by Chinese-Japanese chef Chen Kenmin.

Chef Gino's verdict: “Ang sarap, ang sarap ng rice. Pop na pop 'to kasi 'yung portion kahit for one person lang, it costs only PhP 260. Good for two ito, e, with rice. Mahirap itong ubusin ng isang tao kaya sobrang sulit ito.

“Tapos 'yung kiliti ng pagka-spicy n'ya hindi rin over. Tama lang, so pwede s'yang pang lahat. Tapos 'yung favor profile, 'yung umami galing sa black beans. Masarap.”
