Disney United Kingdom, in support of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, releases a Filipino-themed Christmas advetisement featuring traditional Filipino Christmas and values such as pagmamano.
The ad starts in the Philippines in the 1940s--Chirstmastime--when a little girl welcomes her tatay (Tagalog word for father) home by pagmamano. The father hands her a Mickey Mouse stuffed toy as a gift.
Fast forward to 2005, the little girl is now a lola (grandmother) and living the the UK. She is shown taking care of her female apo (grandchild). Lola passes on her stuffed toy to the girl, as well as the Filipino tradition of making a parol or Christmas lantern.
Through the years, the parol-making became a tradition for the grandmother-grandchild tandem until the girl grows up and loses interest in the one activity lola loves doing with her. One ear of the Mickey Mouse stuffed toy also ripped in one of these parol-making sessions.
One Christmas night as the woman leaves the house to go out, she notices her grandmother's sullen mood. She come backs to a dark and empty living room, without the usual parol lighting up their home.
As a surprise, the woman decided to make multiple parols to decorate the house. She even fixed the broken Mickey Mouse toy and gave it to her lola as a gift.
After seeing the parols, Lola took a trip down memory lane, reminiscing the time she spent celebrating Christmas in the Philippines.
In the description box, Disney explained what the three-minute Christmas advertisement is all about.
"While times change and people grow, beloved family traditions make lifelong memories that cross generations and hold us together, especially over the festive period," it said.
"Lola and her granddaughter share a love of Disney and Christmas crafting, but over time their yearly ritual of making star lanterns begins to fade away. Looking back into Lola's past and seeing her grandmother's much-loved Mickey Mouse inspires her granddaughter to create a festive surprise that lights up her Christmas morning and renews their special bond.
"We hope you enjoy this special Christmas video, From Our Family To Yours."
The ad will be shown in several countries in Europe, Africa, Middle East, Australia, New Zealand, North American, and Asia.
