This Christmas, a very diverse Metro Manila Festival opened to the public -- a festival that includes two action-packed entries. Which ones should you take the time to watch? iGMA gives you the lowdown on the two action-oriented movies in this year’s festival. Text by Loretta G. Ramirez and Jason John S. Lim. Photos by Mitch S. Mauricio. The fight against corruption Anak ng Kumander features the Pambansang Kamao, Manny Pacquiao, in his first ever action movie. A story about the son of a rebel leader named Kumander Idel (Pacquiao), Anak ng Kumander tackles the armed struggle of a man in search for justice. Kumander Idel’s ideology stemmed out of his vow to avenge his father’s death. In the course of his quest, he becomes a modern day Robin Hood. He has helped a number of farmers who are victims of corruption, discrimination, and abuse. Kumander Idel has put the law in his hands, making him the most sought after rebel in the land. Corrupt politicians despise him, the criminals are afraid of him and the law enforcers do not know how to bring him down. Kumander Idel seems to be one invincible force. Thus, a reward of 10 milliion pesos is offered by his enemies (Efren Reyes Jr. and Roi Vinzon) to anyone who can kill Kumander Idel. Will he suffer the same fate as his father’s? According to the movie’s director, Jose ‘Kaka’ Balagtas, “This movie is about a man’s belief at kung ano ang higit na matimbang sa kanya, dangal o pera.” It is a movie that hopes to bring the action film genre back into circulation. “Naipakita ni Manny na hindi lamang sa pagsuntok siya maaasahan. There are many fight scenes in the movie at action star and dating ni Pacman bilang isang anak ng rebelde. Anak ng Kumander might even set a trend sa muling pagkabuhay ng action films,” Kaka boldly declares. The fight against invasion In the not too distant future, a global devastation is brought about by an alien invasion. The event leaves the whole planet in shambles. In the Philippines, a rag-tag group of survivors strives to survive in a secret sanctuary called “Paraiso”. Ramon “Bong” Revilla, Jr. plays Crisval Sarmiento, an ex-military colonel who becomes the de facto leader of the sanctuary’s military force. Under his leadership, his team defends their safe place from two threads: that of the “Mutanos”, the mutated human beings who serve the aliens, and the alien invaders themselves. Together with other rebel fighters, Crisval discovers the real reason for the invasion. And in order to survive, they must go up against a more technologically-advanced alien race using robots and weapons engineered from recycled parts of derelict everyday machines, and other military components. And in the midst of this war for survival, Crisval’s team of rag-tag heroes learn that their greatest weapon is their love, and faith that the can and will survive. From the producer of Agimat and Exodus, and the director of Encantadia and Atlantika, IMUS productions presents Resiklo, a story of the human spirit’s struggle to fight against a malevolent force who is out to destroy the place most important to everyone: home. Resiklo is currently showing in cinemas everywhere as part of this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival. And Anak ng Kumander premieres on the first of January, also as part of the film festival.
