Drew Arellano

Drew Arellano lists three destinations that'll convince you to visit Bulacan.

In the center of the island of Luzon lies the historical, traditional, and cultural province of Bulacan.

The province derived its name from the word “bulak” meaning cotton, its former principal product.

Bulacan started out as a small fishing settlement along the coast of Manila Bay in the early century. By the 16th century, they expanded up north due to the coming of the Spaniards. It is also one of the first provinces to do an uprising against the foreign colonizers.

Based on history and pop culture, Bulacan is the land of heroes, beautiful women, and progressive SMEs (small to medium businesses).

It is also known for its excellent craftsmanship that ranges from jewelry to local handicrafts.

Overtime, Bulacan has become an essential player in the tourism industry of the Philippines making it the ideal destination for every tourist out there.

Perfect for: Those who want to escape the city life

If you're begging to escape your desk job (even for a day), try going to San Ildefonso, Bulacan, and check out Duran Farm.

Founded by former fishball vendor Desiree Duran in 2002, Duran Farm provides assistance to local farmers who want to grow their business.

No wonder she's called the "Seedling Queen of Bulacan!"

For the price of PhP 250, you can enter Duran Farm and marvel at their assortment of fruits and vegetables.

You can also pick the produce you'd like to buy and have them weighed for pricing.

If dining in is what you prefer, they also serve farm to table dishes for your convenience.

Barasoain Church and Museum at Malolos Bulacan

Perfect for: Those who'd like to travel back in time

If culture and tradition is your cup of tea, the city of Malolos is the one for you.

In the city lies the 132-year-old historical Catholic Church called the Barasoain.

Known as Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, it earned the title "Cradle of Democracy in the East" for its historical importance among Filipinos.

How come?

Well, Barasoain is where Emilio Aguinaldo established the First Philippine Congress in 1898 -- a.k.a. the Malolos Congress.

A few steps from the church is where most tourists can find the Barasoain museum.

This showcases the importance of the church in relation to Philippine independence.
