When it was announced that Jennica Garcia would be playing the role of Kim Samsoon's sister, many fans were surprised. But Jennica is out to make the role her own. Text by Jason John S. Lim. Interview by KC M. Abalos. Photos by Mitch S. Mauricio. Jennica Garcia is quick to admit that she wasn't able to watch the original My Lovely Kim Sam Soon; but the young actress definitely knows who her character used to be before the transition to Ako Si Kim Samsoon made her younger-and more kikay. "Si Eliza kasi ng original, mas matanda. Ang ginawa nila, pinabata nila si Eliza-but [she's] still the same character." She explains further that it was her decision to make Eliza more playful, "mas bata. Tapos si Ate [Regine Velasquez] ngayon 'yung mas mature." starsIn the original Kim Sam Soon, Eliza is a newly-divorced woman who is protective of her sister. But in the Filipino version of the hit Korean series, it's Eliza who may need protecting. She has her own love story going on. "Well si Mart [Escudero] sobrang-ayun, 'yung lagi kong sinasabi-laging sobrang masaya." Mart plays Kokoy, the boy-next-door who'll do anything Eliza asks from him, because he loves her. Not that he will admit it, of course. Jennica continues that she enjoys working with Mart, "dahil hello! Impostora pa lang, come on, hindi na ako nahihiwalay sa kanya." Which is very helpful, it turns out. The young actress says that working with Mart is a blessing, especially whenever she needs to memorize lines, however many times over. "Lagi niya akong natutulungan, [kasi] sa kanya hindi na ako nahihiya." How's that for a little parallelism between the characters they play, and their real life personas? But that's where similarities end for Jennica and Eliza-or for this Eliza and the original one, for that matter. In this adaptation, Eliza is pretending to be rich so she could be part of the In Crowd, and to get the boy of her dreams. "Walang lihim na hindi nabubunyag," Jennica says, saying she doesn't think she could do what Eliza is doing. Her grandmother's and godmother's warning aside, she adds that she would rather be loved for who she is than pretend to be someone she's not. "I will never do that." starsShe finishes, "kahit ngayon na naga-acting ako, alam ko na malawak na rin ang utak ng mga tao. Hindi mo na sila pwedeng utuin. Kung ano ang nakikita nila sa'yo, malalaman nila kung nagsasabi ka ng totoo." Is that a clue as to how the Pinay Eliza's story will unravel?
