Dolphy Banayad Whisky is real

How does Eric Quizon and his siblings keep Dolphy's legacy? Find out here:

It's been about three decades since Dolphy's iconic “Banayad Whisky” sketch was seen in the movie Father En Son (1995). Thanks to social media, the pseudo-commercial shot for the movie became a viral meme in recent years.

In the said scene, the late Comedy King was cast as an actor for the supposed TV commercial of “Banayad Whisky.” As the shoot went on, Dolpy repeatedly gulped the strong whisky until he got drunk and muttered the iconic “lasang blade” line in one of the takes.

Since it resurfaced, it was timely that Dolphy's kids, led by his son Eric Quizon, created a true Banayad Whisky.

In a previous interview, Eric told GMANetwork.com that their family had already considered creating a whisky in honor of his father.

He said, “Matagal na talaga namin iniisip 'yan, buhay pa ang Daddy ko. However, hindi naman siya nag-materialize kasi nga, during that time, medyo may edad na rin ang Daddy ko. So, naiba na rin ang focus namin, ang talagang iniisip namin ay talagang for his health. Parang it's not appropriate to sell whisky when my dad has COPD, di ba?”

When the video started circulating online, Eric said he and his family reconsidered their previous plan, especially after discovering that someone else had already done it without their consent.

“Pinag-iisipan na namin. But of course, going about it was very difficult,” he said.

“It even came to a point when there was this group that was selling it using my dad's face and using the lines in the movie. I called their attention. I told them that this is copyrighted. The author of that is my dad, and this is part of a movie. Anything that is part of a movie is copyrighted.

“Sabi ko, 'I can sue you. Pero hindi ako masamang tao. Let's collaborate and let's make this better.' In the beginning, nakipag-usap sila sa akin. After that na sinabi kong stop selling muna because we have to lay the grounds with the heirs and all that, biglang nag-disappear.”

The incident prompted his family to move forward with the venture, naming the liquor brand Pidol's Banayad Whisky.

Eric said, “Ito, official na because we have our IPO, naka-trademark, naka-copyright. We have our own rights to Pidol's Banayad Whisky.”

Although it's still in its infancy stage, Eric already saw a lot of interest in their drink when they had a soft launch at a travel expo.

Eric also takes pride in their product as it's a premium Scotch whisky.

He said, “The thing is the price is not cheap, ha. It is bottled in Scotland kaya siya mahal. Kasi, nag-taste test kami, e. We talked to so many people until, finally, itong Highland and Spey, sila ang nag-concoct at yun ang nagustuhan namin.”

“He is still providing for us.”

Dolphy's family remains grateful that, even years after his passing, the legacy of the Comedy King continues to support them.

Eric said, “We are so proud that my dad has that impact on people. Siyempre ngayon, yung mga bata parang hindi na nila masyadong kilala o parang they hear his name and they see his videos.

“Kami, on our part, sabi ko in one of my interviews, my dad is already dead, but he is still providing for us. It is true because all of these things that are happening online now, I mean, naka-attach ang name niya. So meaning, it would not have the same impact if it weren't for his name.

“So, kaming magkakapatid, let's prolong his legacy and let's push it para people won't forget him. Yun talaga ang goal namin.”

In addition to Banayad Whisky, the Quizons also established a neighborhood bakery called Pidol's Bakeshop, which is now available for franchising.

The family is also developing Dolphy Manor inside Dolphy Ville Estates in Calatagan, Batangas. In the same location, they plan to build a museum dedicated to honoring the legacy of the comedy icon. With regard to Dolphy's movies, Eric shared that they hope to release these on streaming platforms and organize special screenings once the museum is done.

According to Eric, almost everyone in their family is involved in these businesses.

He explained, “In any estate, it has to be a unanimous vote. If one says no, it will not happen. E, ang dami namin, 18 kami, kasama pa si Zsa Zsa [Padilla]. May vote din siya because nasa last will and testament. So, kapag may isang humindi, hindi matutuloy.”

Despite their number, Dolphy's children remain united when it comes to making decisions.

“Siguro ang common denominator namin kaya hindi kami nag-aaway-away is because of my dad. Kapag nag-uusap kami, ang parati kong sinasabi, 'Put yourself in dad's shoes. Ano sa palagay n'yo ang iisipin ni dad with regard to this?' I always get back to them and refer to my dad na parang, 'You know Daddy. If you're Daddy, what are you gonna do? So, parating nilalagay nila ang sarili nila sa katauhan ng daddy ko,” he ended.
