Philippine director Erik Matti was recently tapped to direct a Philippine episode for the second season of HBO Asia horror anthology series Folklore.
In an announcement made on Instagram by Reality Entertainment, the acclaimed director will join an “impressive lineup of directors representing different territories in Asia.”
“We are proud to announce that Director @erikmatti will be directing the Philippine episode for the @hboasia original horror anthology series, 'Folklore.'
“The new season will ramp up the fear factor as it examines the human condition when exposed to supernatural powers in a mind-bending race against oneself, each story bringing a different take and perspective.”
Erik Matti is known for his many Filipino horror hits, including Vesuvius (2012), Seklusyon (2016), and Kwaresma (2019).
The Philippines will be joining six other countries in the second season, including Thailand, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Japan, and is scheduled to premiere in 2021.
Folklore is created by Singaporean director Eric Khoo. The six-episode series features stories based on different superstitions and national folkloric myths found in Asian countries.
Prior to the Folklore gig, Erik also took part in the HBO Asia series Food Lore where he directed the episode titled “Island of Dreams.”
The episode explores the life of Nieves (played by Angeli Bayani), an ambitious woman who leaves her husband and children to become a domestic helper in Metro Manila. Upon returning home, she realizes that she has grown estranged from her family due to the many changes in her life.
Erik won Best Director of a Scripted TV Program, while Food Lore bagged the Best Asian Drama for Regional/International Market Category at the Content Asia Awards in August 2020.
